If you are in favour of more broadly-distributed wealth and better economic outcomes for more people, understand that you can't accomplish anything by ignoring how markets function and pretending the world is a socialist fantasy land. Use markets. Understand the levers. Avoid unintended outcomes.

We are currently losing 3 minutes and 36 seconds of daylight every day. By my calculations, we will have no daylight left by April 13, 2027. And that's optimistically assuming that the loss doesn't accelerate. In early August we lost less than 3 minutes a day. I fear all is lost. Hug your kids.

The further tech infiltrates our lives, yes AI, but also phones, wearables, and soon implants, the more we're abdicating cognition; we'll just become meat puppets that the AI is wearing, unwilling and incapable of thinking for ourselves.

That... doesn't make... sense. If your own federal bank doesn't lower the interest rate, you'll cut off trade with countries you have a trade deficit with? And that will help what exactly? This is why you elect a PhD in economics instead of an idiot. www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/7423991...

This is the best summary of the parties in the Vancouver civic election I've seen. And I will say, the only thing that houses people is housing.

Here lies Ben Coli. He died doing what he loved: complaining about crappy bike infrastructure and inadequate construction detours.

The trade war sucks, but at least this shitbag's pettiness is hilarious. “So, if you think about it, we have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean. So maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific." www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/7423991...

As a general rule, meat should either be cooked just barely enough that it is not hazardous to your health, or have the hell cooked out of it until it is falling apart. I don't have a lot of time for medium-well.

I got to brew Lake City Farmhouse today! It's been 5 years since we brewed it. It's a spiced and herbed saison, made with fresh rosemary and sage from our own gardens. It'll be out just before Thanksgiving (the Canadian one, in October) and it's going to be a great turkey pairing.

In some ways, my body is like Michelangelo's David. Okay, it's just one way: flexibility. I am exactly as flexible as Michelangelo's statue of David.

New Rozedag label has dropped. I don't care what you say, this beer looks hawt! The beer's pretty good, too. This year's Rozedag is a 5.5% Belgian IPA with all kinds of fancy, trendy hops.

Sometimes I see a person walking down the sidewalk, full of purpose, intelligence and human dignity, when suddenly their phone leaps into their hand. Their eyes glaze over, their head angles down 70°, their speed drops by half and they stumble down the sidewalk, not knowing or caring where they are.

I know this is usually a beer space, but bear with me: Bitter mezcal negroni Like a normal negroni but sub the gin with mezcal, and 1/2 the Campari with Fernet Branca Zang. Cleansingly bitter

I can't believe Canadian politicians haven't learned this lesson: never go to the Stampede. It doesn't matter how good your stylist is, you are going to look like a jackass in whatever cowboy hat and western costume they put you in. Have they already forgotten Harper's bondage cowboy outfit?

Little Dageraad pays $30k a year in property taxes, almost half of which funds education. On the other hand, when we need a new employee, we have a huge pool of candidates who are literate and can do basic math, so I guess it's a pretty good deal for the business.

I got a new bike two years ago. Partly because my old bike with rim breaks was getting expensive to maintain. I ride 5-6000 km per year in all kinds of weather, mostly commuting to work. My rim breaks were wearing through my rims (especially when wet) and i had to get my wheels rebuilt every year.

New Zealand is playing here on Sunday. How quickly do you think I can get a t-shirt printed with an Australian flag with "NEW ZEALAND" written under it? I just want to hang out downtown and see who notices.

I haven't been needlessly peevish on here in awhile. Let's fix that. Here's something people say that I hate: Pre-prepared To get ready in advance in advance? The prefix "pre" is already in there. It means to get something ready before it's needed. You don't need to do it before that.

Today is the Mayor of Burnaby's annual lawn bowling tournament! A beautiful day for a Dart. The first year Dageraad won the tournament. The second year we took second. Last year we were 14th or something. At this rate, we're on a trajectory to be last this year.

Looking at this photo again, and I have to make a product dis-endorsement (no, not the Dart). Brooks rubber bar tape sucks. Less than two years in and it is as ripped as fashionable jeans. Get the leather tape. And if you're vegan, stop being vegan and get the leather tape.

Seven years ago, at Dageraad's fifth anniversary, our slogan was "celebrating five years of stubborn existence" I guess selling Belgian-style beer in an IPA market felt like an uphill battle We make (good) lager and (good) IPA now, but I'm proud that most of the beer we sell is still Belgian-style

Do you miss the old days of blockbuster beer releases? For our 12th anniversary we have: A saison A table saison A brett table saison A mixed-culture spruce tip beer Two fruited barrel-aged sours (nectarines and cherries) And a biere de coupage combining various barrel aged beers and fresh saisons

If you're wondering what to do on Saturday, come by Dageraad for our 12th anniversary party. We've got music and food trucks and a charity dunk tank, and we're releasing a bunch of beers. It's basically a celebration of saison. The good kind, the dry ones, not the sweet ones. We have other beer too

I have a very low tolerance for most off-flavours in beer, but I have a weird affection for lightly-skunked saison when I'm sitting in the sunshine, drinking out of a glass.

Two months after he finished defeating the Nazis, Winston Churchill lost an election and was kicked out of office. If anyone deserved to lose to Labour, it was him. He was a condescending patrician who hated working people. But the guy beat Hitler and voters said, what have you done for me lately?

Reason #586 why I will never get rich running a craft brewery: I just signed a lease renewal that puts us on the hook for a million dollars of rent over the next five years This brewery has been very profitable for my landlord and the provincial government As long as they're doing well, I'm happy

Renewed my car insurance recently and learned that my wife and I drove 3400 km in the family car we share in the last 12 months. I racked up 6500 km on my bike in the last year. I feel like I'm nailing this.

My local walk-in clinic has a text-back service now. Instead of sitting in a waiting room, getting exposed to respiratory viruses for three hours, you can go and get a coffee and sit in the park and wait for the text. So much unnecessary misery that is now avoidable. Why did it take this long?

FUTURE ARCHAEOLOGIST: plastic-age humans had a particular reverence for canine feces. They carefully wrapped billions of samples and buried them in their plastic middens to preserve them. We believe it was central to their system of religious beliefs, but their literature was lost in the AI wars.
