2nd mind was supposed to be mine, IT IS HAPPENING

when I look at MIND compared to the words above I start to feel mind slipping away

I would also like to comment on the sheer madness of the kerning and type compression here, perhaps foreshadowing that some parts of the mind will be expanded more than others

new reply meme just dropped, pass it on
In an 80s era, black and white newspaper ad, a suave man in a turtleneck is surrounded by a halo of electricity (possibly), and also a squiggly drawing is emerging from his forehead seemingly representing the profundity of the universe itself. The caption is RELAX TOTALLY! EXPAND YOUR MIND!

copyediting a fine art book and a minor infuriation: I am not allowed to restyle or correct anything in painting titles because it might have artistic purpose ... but I've never edited writing by a painter that wasn't full of non-intentional errors (can't ask the dude cos he's dead)

cf out of home care/youth group homes are often dirty, broken down and run like a quasi prison, communicating 'you have no value to society', 'our default stance towards you is hostility', also 'your expected next life stage is going to prison'

did a cool subject taught by Brotherhood of St Lawrence about their program for pathways out of youth homelessness into employment, they said that when they provide housing it needs to be high-quality and attractive because that psychologically produces the experience of being an employable person

thinking about how this stuff actually psychologically produces the experience of high/low class position in the trolley user, like the supermarket will say it's in reaction to who the local clientele are, but it also has the effect of *telling* the local clientele who they are

have been obliged to move, discovered that not only do the Brighton Coles trolleys not have anti theft devices a la western suburbs, they actually have cup holders

Manuscript page for Anita Brookner’s 1988 novel Latecomers, as featured in Hermione Lee’s forthcoming biography.
Two pages of tight, neat but hard to read handwriting in a spiral bound book. No changes or edits are visible. Cover of the book, showing a photo of Brookner alongside a vase of slightly drooping tulips

I like 'ask the internet' as asking can only be done to people, which foregrounds that the internet is made of people, 37 million billion trillion deranged tiny clown people squashed in a microprocessor the size of a fingernail all squeezing their bulb horns

another way to tell is obviously to read a lot in the journals you're submitting to - bearing in mind that what is published is the top tier of what's received, and this doesn't tell you anything about what gets rejected
010
Belinda Rule @belindarule.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
volunteering as a first-pass (slush pile) reader at a small journal is a great way to understand where your work sits in the pack. sometimes you need a publication history to qualify but sometimes not (e.g. uni creative writing programs sometimes fund a lit journal to give students experience)

Belinda Rule @belindarule.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
I feel like I wanna say to people struggling to get published in lit fic: - if you are working at a publishable standard, it's a numbers/dogged persistence game - if you're not, submitting a lot just wastes your time and others' but how can you tell which is you? >

imagining avant garde writers gnashing teeth, baying for blood. of course I mean 'plot' in the loosest possible way: 'an idea develops', 'a change happens' (I don't think any avant garde writers follow me, they are busy eating architects' drafting instruments or having themselves encased in glass)

Belinda Rule @belindarule.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
I worry when I post like this it will stress out people who try to get published in lit journals. do not be stressed, just: - do not precis or pitch your short story unless asked - short stories are short and have a story. if that doesn't suit the way you like to write, pick another form.

in a small but alarming number of cases, it means 'verbosely and floridly emotive'
110
Belinda Rule @belindarule.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
have never heard 'poetic' as a self-description from a short story writer who seems like they could write publishable contemporary poetry, tbh. it seems to mean 'slow and heavily descriptive to little purpose', which is close to the definition of a failed short story.
130
Belinda Rule @belindarule.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
also if you make qualitative claims - 'builds to a powerful ending', 'alludes to a tragic secret' or 'poetic' (egads) - and I did not have that experience in my reading, that becomes a definitive failure where otherwise I might not even have known you had that intention
110
Belinda Rule @belindarule.bsky.social · 24/07/2026

Belinda Rule @belindarule.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
lit journal slush reading back on. clearly so many people are being told they should precis/pitch a short story in the cover letter. for me, cripes no. literary short stories should not feel didactic or like I've read them before, but you're making me read a didactic, shitter version in advance?

New today on the Society's blog: 'How to Read Foreign-Language Sources in 80 Days' bit.ly/4fx6TVp Dr Jasper Heinzen on the value of, and routes to, better language understanding for Year 3 History students. Jasper's project was supported by an RHS Teaching Fellowship for 2025-26 #Skystorians
Opening page for the post: 'How to Read Foreign-language Sources in 80 Days: Helping History Students Get the Most out of Translation Software', by Dr Jasper Heinzen, University of York.

Full abstract: "In this post Dr Jasper Heinzen reflects on the design and implementation of his recent project, ‘How to Read Foreign-language Sources in 80 Days: Helping Students Get the Most out of Translation Software’. This project, run at the University of York, was supported by the award from the Society of a Jinty Nelson Teaching Fellowship for 2025-26.

The project enabled Year 3 History Undergraduates to gain a basic understanding of the German language in order to support primary research in German texts for their dissertations.

Jasper emphasises the necessity of expanding language knowledge and education ‘to prevent the refraction of global cultural knowledge through the prism of one language’.

The Society’s Teaching Fellowships programme runs annually to encourage innovative practice in the teaching of history in higher education. The Fellowships are generously supported by the Scouloudi Foundation. Recipients of Fellowships for 2026-27 will be announced in the near future."
