@matthewfairburn.bsky.social Last time I was following @buffalo-bills.bsky.social, Jim Kelly was QB! The guy was solid in and out of the pocket. I think he used to be a linebacker?

Gosh, sorry to hear this. I was looking forward to seeing Byram cause some chaos in the KeyBank Center against @sabres.com. The guy is pure dynamite in the crease.

I hadn't really thought of Powell & Pressburger as trailblazing their own tradition in British cinema. But, yes, I can see that there is a direct line to Ken Russell, Nic Roeg and Ben Wheatley now that @kermodemovie.bsky.social mentioned it. Surely, a good article for @sightsoundmag.bsky.social?

A brilliant film and a nice way to finish off the Cornish Trilogy. I also appreciated the extra features on the BFI Blu-ray releases.

A friend recommended that I read "History of the Peloponnesian War". Hmm.. okay, I'm going to give it a go. I haven't read anything by #Thucydides.

I just grabbed Rose of Nevada, which was shot on a vintage, 50-year-old clockwork 1976 Bolex H-16 SB 16mm film camera. You need to wind them up every 27 seconds. An interesting way to work in today's world and another distinctive film from Mark Jenkin. Lovely extras on this #BFI edition.

@susiedentwords.bsky.social Hello Susie Dent. Wasn't "Ballardian" added to the dictionary to refer to scenes from J. G. Ballard's dystopian novels? Thanks.

Sandy, wet beach with tidepools. Large headlands/dunes with trees and sun rising behind. Much is reflected in tidepool near rocks on beach.

I wasn't expecting to end up where I did on this journey with Charlie Walker. It was chilling in parts. Only the brave would even contemplate such a journey. On Thin Ice reads like an edge-of-your-seat thriller. A fantastic book.

True, but she comes across better than her recent predecessors who were total disasters. A Labour - Lib Dem coalition government would be a headache for the Tories and Farage if he is still in politics for the next general election.

A similar book about J. G. Ballard could have the title: "Ballard/Space: Critical Interpretations of Spatially, Near Futures and Dystopia". I'd read it! Through a number of first rate novels and short stories, Ballard showed us that he had a very unique geographical imagination.

Congratulations to @iannathan.bsky.social and everyone who put together "The Thing Expanded" It's a stunning documentary and a mammoth achievement. I was happy to help to bring it to fruition. It is without a doubt the ultimate tribute and deep dive into John Carpenter's seminal film. Amazing!

Don Siegel's "Edge of Eternity" was superb. It can't have been easy to shoot on such a low budget. The Canyon made for a spectacular backdrop. The chases were so well shot. Definitely an inspiration for some later Bond movies. I see what you mean by "termite art" @josearroyo.bsky.social

You are a deluded individual with entrenched views. Perhaps you should learn to think more critically about policies which have shaped the lives of immigrants. I would provide you with a reading list but something tells me that it would be a complete waste of time, much like communicating with you.

Belfast_Nomad @belfastnomad.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
I get ya. I tend to look at policies, though as people just don't randomly end up in Paris, Dublin, Belfast or wherever. They follow a process which is delineated in and enabled by policy documentation.

Belfast_Nomad @belfastnomad.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Your point would have been semi-good if anti-immigrant sentiment had been born at the same time as the internet and social media, which has undoubtedly amplified it.

Belfast_Nomad @belfastnomad.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
You either a) don't want to listen or b) you are happy to deal with the symptoms of the issue rather than the root causes - the policy process is surely one of them. If you genuinely cared about human rights you'd be looking at their polity in France & Ireland qua the ECHR.

Belfast_Nomad @belfastnomad.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
That's not what I mean at all. There is a policy process involved, you know.
100
Belfast_Nomad @belfastnomad.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
What can you expect when you have a failing policy? Maybe now, politicians will wake up and smell the coffee: Some refugees are not primarily concerned about getting to a safe country. Aren't France and Ireland also signed up to the human rights convention? I think you'll find that they are.

Condemning riots isn't enough. We need policy action, including an immediate appraisal of X as a vehicle for coordinating far-right disorder. And we need political leadership, to challenge white nationalism as an idea, not to validate it daily and then complain when it turns violent.

Before his Hollywood breakthrough in the 1980s with "Witness" (1985) and "Dead Poets Society" (1989), Peter Weir was a very Aussie filmmaker. "The Cars That Ate Paris" (1974) and "The Plumber" (1979) were two decent early films from the massively talented director. Great stuff #BFI

Yes, I heard Blair on Radio 4 this morning talking about his essay. He made some valid points i.e. the best politics comes from "the radical centre". However, many politicians have, I think, lost sight of the radical centre.

Marco Bellocchio's "Slap the Monster on Page One" (1972) is a deep dive into what we now call "fake news". It's about the consequences which emanate from a culture more concerned with printing the news than its relationship with the truth. A lovely release from @filmsradiance.bsky.social

"L. A. Confidential" (1997) stuck with me. I loved how it sanded away the glamorous layers of Hollywood and dragged its culture through the gutter. A great film directed by Curtis Hanson, based on the James Elroy novel. An ensemble cast as well.

The Labour-Consverative stronghold has been loosened even further. No PM wants to be presiding over a patchwork quilt of deflated councils. Starmer needs to be more of a pragmatist.

The Kristeva book sounds like it'll be an engaging read. She was certainly well placed academically to tackle Dostoevsky's works. What a mammoth task to have completed. I'll try to get my hands on this book. 👍

Situated on the #Chicago River, THE MART, formerly known as The Merchandise Mart, occupies more than 4 million square feet (approximately 372,000 square meters) on a lot the size of two and a half city blocks! It is one of the most impressive #ArtDeco buildings I have seen anywhere in the world.

There is something deeply contextual in reading a book about a city when you happen to be in that city. Jackson Park in Chicago was the site of the 1893 World Fair. Today the park features about 200 cherry blossom trees, which bloom each spring planted to commemorate that event.
