It’s not just about what you remove (cars, noise, dirty air). It’s about what you add (people walking, a lot of bike parking, trees, outdoor dining, and room for kids to play safely). Amsterdam: 1986 and today. Streets for people. HT @hackneycyclist.bsky.social for the great before-and-after

Kiddical Mass......In the rain!
To be fair the rain stopped just in time for the ride, though not early enough to protect the Marshalls from what seems to be an epidemic of raincoats that have lost their waterproofness!

"Bike lanes restrict road space. Bike lanes have turned streets into parking lots, with residents unable to shop, get kids to events, and seriously impact emergency services & Wheel-Trans." Actually, no. 100% wrong. Car dependency & too much driving with increasingly large vehicles does all that.

How many cigarettes worth of air pollution are kids breathing in during school drop off and pick up? School streets should be car-free.

If your city can afford to build roads everywhere, it can afford to build cycle networks too. It’s not about money — it’s about priorities. It’s a political choice

Thanks to BBC NI for highlighting this issue. Cycle lanes have to be car free (at a minimum) to encourage cyclists of all abilities to get around by bike!

People who've biked for decades may not realize how daunting it is for a novice to even understand what options exist. (I've experienced this myself -- I was in my 30s when I bought my first bike.) Nice to see AARP offer this primer.

Tweets about urban biking in #Dutch cities are routinely replied to with some version of “well, they have the big advantage of being relatively flat.” The Dutch also have the big advantage of not constantly making excuses and straw man arguments about why they can’t make clearly smarter decisions.

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years as a result of a deliberate strategy. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

When it comes to designing cities for biking & walking, Ghent (Gent) Belgium may not be as well known as Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Paris (yet), but it’s one of the most inspiring cities in the world. I was honoured to do some work with them in 2019. Watch @streetfilms.bsky.social’s fantastic video:

There was this whole thing where people said the French wouldn't embrace bicycle commuting like the Dutch because of inherent cultural traits and these lanes would be ghost towns. Instead, obviously, bike usage exploded as soon as the infrastructure was made available. These are all lessons people!
