Fact: part of Dracula's success was based on setting the vampire myth out of antiquity and into modern life Fact: Mumm-ra insists as long as evil exists that Mumm-ra lives Proposal: we are missing out on a story setting Mumm-ra in modern America. I propose Mamdani's New York for added comedy.

Oh no, they just mean the perspective distortion where things closer to the frame get stretched out. It actually took us a really long time as a species to accept that. Truly. It's one of the most recent photographic norms.

Zed @behindthebluemotel.com · 6h
I feel like the earliest WA advocates understood it as a tool for getting closer, and somewhere along the line that changed

Zed @behindthebluemotel.com · 6h
I think I've seen the distortion of the 28mm described as 'grotesque' as late as the 80s. I'm not sure when it switched over to its current context WRT fitting more of the scene in, but, there's a lot of me that wants to say that's related to the rise of the cameraphone.

Also worth noting that at this time the telephoto was the first extended range accepted. Wide angles took far longer to catch on.

Zed @behindthebluemotel.com · 6h
The idea of maximizing "IQ" traces back at least as far as this and the tone of these articles suggests it's a known and tired argument by this point. So, basically, photography forum people have literally never changed.

The sexism of the 50s is weird because it just assumes anyone reading is a man vs the 70s-80s when it has more cheesecake on the menu than any franchise of the restaurant. This is still the era of arguing over very esoteric developer combos. An expert suggested 7 flash exposures instead of 7 flashes

Zed @behindthebluemotel.com · 6h
It's interesting that as late as 1954 columnists were still writing articles imploring people to embrace telephotos for creative vistas.

Shin's theatrical re-release is what actually kicked this off. @nuclearbob.net and I went to see that together having missed it the first round, and both thought we should watch more Godzilla. Then on Thanksgiving he joined me on a cold headspace walk and we decided to combine the walk and 'zillas.

We are past Shin and up to (but I have previously seen) Minus One. I count both among my very favorites yeah. I am apprehensive accordingly about how Minus Zero will go...

Zed @behindthebluemotel.com · 7h
My favorites will always go back to the root as Godzilla as a man vs nature introspection about man's hubris. The brawlers can be a lot of fun and I've enjoyed many, but, for me the original metaphor still hits hardest.

I have a hard time being too critical of anything that has the good sense to cast Charles Dance as a villain...

Zed @behindthebluemotel.com · 7h
Yeah you're good. It wasn't what I wanted but it's in no way among the worst in my book. Some fun bits, some good designs, and one of the most absurd frames ever in a Godzilla. Solid franchise installment.

famously people cannot draw an accurate bicycle so clearly nobody knows how bicycles work despite the fact that they’re a wholly human-made object and produced by several companies and all, when it comes down to it, basically interchangeable in form and function IT’S a MYSTERY

4-panel comic by War and Peas. Panel 1: Slutty Witch walks through a supermarket on her phone, her black cat Lord Nibbles at her feet. The vampire remarks, "Looks like everyone's a witch nowadays." Lord Nibbles jumps in his shopping cart. Panel 2: The vampire pushes the shopping cart with the cat inside and says to the witch "You should be glad. Witches are cool now." Panel 3: The vampire happily says, "Just like sucking people off is cool now, too!" Panel 4: Lord Nibbles in the cart looks mortified. "You've GOT to stop calling it that."

Legendary Godzilla is scaled for Legendary Defender, Toho classic is the right scale for GoLion/DOTU. Let's do this people.

Monarch the series is the first to find a sustainable way around this by making the plot about thrupples and only sometimes also Godzilla exists.

Zed @behindthebluemotel.com · 7h
I maintain that once it becomes 'big monsters punching each other' it always falls apart quickly. Godzilla as a concept is hard to do more than one movie per reboot of and have it land as it should.

I am fascinated at how much DNA this shares with Heisei and especially Millennium era Toho, but most of the time it pulls it off in a way those struggled too. It's not... better, it still looks like a AAA video game cutscene. The visual editing is maybe better at selling the illusions though?

I like the reframing of Kong in these as a protector but I'm still baffled by this American insistence that a very large ape is an obvious equal to a nuclear dragon. Even the apes in Primal Rage had the magical powers of snow and filth to fight with.
