this is what Ive been talking about I want to see games developed for older, cheaper systems. a ps5 game does not have better gameplay than a ps2 game (ie: thats not the constraint) lets ditch these RTX raytrace boxes and get back to the real shit, fun games that dont require 500 person teams

I apprecciate both the pentode and the formica! my grandfather would have been 96 this year, I always loved his stories, sharing of the 20th century

they're definitely bits and pieces of circuits, but yeah some of the rails make no sense, theres a lot of vacuum tube and transistor hybrid circuits feels like they just copied random stuff from a book

Kawajiri is still unsurpassed in my opinion, he was cutting through to an animation language Ive only glimpsed a few other times. Im sad he's basically too old to direct these days

this is why resident evil ostensibly ended for me after Nemesis. the new games are very pretty, they're easier to control, but they're Action games now and do not instill the same sort of patient dread the originals had

thats one of the reasons I abandoned Substance Painter. there are faster ways to generate all of those maps, it ended up being a huge timesink

can be any number of approaches. you can extrude a cube or grid, you can block out lots of shapes and then weld them together later, etc

I model all my natural environments manually because every time Ive tried some kind of heightmap or voxel terrain system, its a nightmare of tool dependencies, deprecation, very slow iterative loops

the best difficulty menu I've seen to date is Silent Hill 2's, which understood that people who want puzzle challenge and combat challenge are not a direct overlap after seeing this back in like 2001 I assumed it would've become standard, but here we are 25 years later and it remains a curiosity

this is maybe a very slow, deprecated way to do this kind of thing in 2026, but its the only thing I trust to make organic spaces in a controllable way

I was not a system shock guy but I applaud any game that provides that level of granularity to the experience is that in system shock 1 or 2? I might actually play them if I can throttle it like that

thanks! all of the circuts was based on something, making a device like this from scratch would take many years of design work, that was not in the commission cost

I always go Normal riddle and easy combat I just want to soak up the world, the puzzles are hard enough on normal, I dont require additional obfuscation

this was the largest pedal I ever made (it was a commission) modelled after the lovetone shape, with expression pedal inputs on the front of each effect

I compare it to something like a book, which dont make you re-read a chapter because you did it too slowly or missed a few words. they keep it moving I dont think monsters taking 10 bullets instead of 5 is *usually* a matter of artistic intent. its arbitrary Im mostly talking AAA, not Art games

I would never suggest something like this for other media though people will pick and choose songs from albums, but people typically do not read random chapters in their books Im interested in flow states, immersion, and I feel like death in games often (not always!) interrupts those flow states.

the real framing would be something like: How Much Free Time Do You Have? - Very little! (I dont have time to die and restart many times) -Lots! (I'm fine with dying and restarting) ultimately this is about Dying and Restarting, or availability of saves/checkpoints

ʟᴜɪs ʜᴇʀɴᴀɴᴅᴇᴢ ⚡ @beetlenaut.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
yeah I dont have time to die and replay the same area 20 times. just let me flow through the story or environments

the prevalence of souls-likes is part of what made me reframe how I see difficulty in games. its less that the they're hard, and more how I feel like they assume I have all the time in the world its possible I wouldve enjoyed them had I been 15 when they came out. I dont have time for that shit now

I would prefer if Difficulty Settings (easy, med, hard) were replaced with Free Time preference eg: How Much Free Time Do You Have? -Very Little! -Lots! because ultimately I feel that it comes down to: how much patience you have for dying and restarting? getting spotted by guards, etc
