ICOs trees dont really carry as well in screenshots but because they're animated, they evoke the notion of wind/movement in a way I hadn't seen before in any game

I model all my natural environments manually because every time Ive tried some kind of heightmap or voxel terrain system, its a nightmare of tool dependencies, deprecation, very slow iterative loops

the best difficulty menu I've seen to date is Silent Hill 2's, which understood that people who want puzzle challenge and combat challenge are not a direct overlap after seeing this back in like 2001 I assumed it would've become standard, but here we are 25 years later and it remains a curiosity

this was the largest pedal I ever made (it was a commission) modelled after the lovetone shape, with expression pedal inputs on the front of each effect

Me and 9 games that shaped me Im trying to only list the games I was obsessed with. games where I'd go to school and just sit there drawing scenarios and characters and locations. didn't include PS2/dreamcast era, sticking strictly with the 90s despite how formative those consoles were for me

amazingly there are still active Quake III servers in 2026. I popped into a match of The Longest Yard last night, first time fighting humans and not bots in ...25 years? was shocked that I was able to survive and thrive in that arena, I assumed only super hardcore people were left in servers

so at necrophone, we developed the term "Brain RAM" to describe the maximum numbers of THINGS you can hold in your brain at any given time. eg: variables, meshes, tasks, sounds, etc. theres a hard limit to the amount you can keep track of before you are overloaded what do other studios call this?

mine: Blakestone. we had a 386 that couldn't handle newer stuff like Doom, so I was limited to Wolf3d clones. Blakestone was my fav of these Powerslide. amazing post-apocalyptic racing game from Australia. giant polygonal tracks, no tricks. Beavis & Butthead Virtual Stupidity. hilarious & dumb

currently trying to get this cursed CD-rom controller card to work, but its really obsolete and seems to be geared mostly for DOS. very early CD-rom stuff might have to give up on this guy and just settle with the single IDE cable for everything

amazingly got the soundcard working! what a hellspace of IRQ and DMA settings its some flavour of MediaVision pro audio spectrum 16 or some such. I always had sound blasters, I think I once had some hercules card? anyway, fired up doom II and could hear the shots, fm music

still wrestling with this 486, which it turns out was not pristine, but rather fully expressing all of the ways in which a 35 year old computer might decay leaking CMOS battery, undetectable CDROM, sketchy floppy drive, lost HD partitions finally got win95 to install though! no soundcard yet

scored a pristine 486DX today this was my first "real" computer back in the 90s. I grew up with DOS and eventually we got windows95, and eventually 98 but this is 2026 and Im wondering, what operating system would you install nowadays? should I go full DOS? is there something meaner/leaner

Viktor was apparently fresh out of art school when working on this title, so he wasn't the Art director, that was Michael Kaufman supposedly Viktor did do a bunch of Dishonoured style character portraits for the game, but they weren't used. I cant seem to find those sketches anywhere. has anyone ?

I've been studying Kingpin: Life of Crime (1998) , which I always found to be a remarkably beautiful game its immediately apparent that someone on the design team has a cinematographer or fine arts background, the lightmaps are too designed I then remembered that VIKTOR ANTONOV worked on the game

However it reveals the true limitation of AAA, which is that digital humans are not animated even remotely like actual actors behave. they jerk, they twitch, their eyelines dont match, their lipsync is off. even ILM was unable to create convincing digital doubles of known dead actors; just failure

that is correct people may have had an immense amount of fun playing them, but they're not especially interesting design-wise. its a somewhat symmetrical set of hills and valleys. thats fine, but its not the data I'm seeking

I really need to clarify something about topologies, because Im getting a lot of Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch responses, neither of which satisfy the form/structure of a DM level if the map is symmetrical, its TDM or CTF, and so cannot do too many weird/outlandish designs. its a diff flow
a gears of war map, made for team deathmatch. the arena is symmetrical, so that both teams are given an equal playing fieldRapidcore Deathmatch arena for Half Life 1. the map is a set of interconnected rooms, corridors, levels. the map is not symmetrical, as players are spawning at many different points. it emphasizes a flow differently than CTF or TDM

just imagine what lemmings would be now if they'd have been allowed to stick with it but agreed, in order to have an amazing 10th album, the band needs to stick together for 30 years, something suits will never understand

I had a dubbed tape of Rocky Horror Picture show as a child, I watched it so many times I wore the tape out. I didn't fully understand the movie but I knew it was amazing and felt genuinely subversive Tim Curry was one of the pillars of my childhood, his characters were myraid and distinct RIP💔
