I listened and enjoyed it but it’s the Lily Seabird record that really got my attention.

I’m anxious to listen. My first spin of the day is the new one from Lily Seabird.

Not all R.E.M. fans are Gen Xer’s. R.E.M. themselves are not Gen X. My favorite post-Bill Berry album is Up. Following his departure they could’ve taken the easy way out but instead rose to the challenge by taking a new musical direction. The last 2 albums are them trying to sound more familiar.

It was Waxahatchee & MJ Lenderman’s cover from earlier this year that put the song on my radar.

I didn’t become aware of the song until Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman started covering it in their shows earlier this year.

I grappled with this recently when writing about specific romantic memories that Nada Surf’s The Weight Is A Gift album never fails to conjure up. It turned 21 (!) recently.

R.E.M. announced they were disbanding 15 years ago today. In ‘83 I was drawn in by “Laughing.” As I dove deeper I was captivated not just by the sound but also the mystique. Shadows, catacombs, kudzu, a rustic pastoral landscape of sound that was at once ancient & contemporary. youtu.be/KStirqnmD6Y

(6/6) Fast forward to the waning months of 1980 when we lost John Bonham & John Lennon. So many of the artists responsible for the music that helped shape me began to disappear from the landscape. These live albums take me back to a more hopeful & joyful time that defined the days of my youth.

Yesterday was the 42nd anniversary of my favorite rock station going Country. I got turned on to lots of music outside the mainstream from friends & relatives but WQDR was like a lifeline, especially for those of in the rural areas. Hearing “Laughing” by R.E.M. on that station was revelatory.

(4/4) Stations like QDR only come along once in a lifetime. They were not flawless but they did achieve a remarkable merging of music, air personalities, and community. Link below to a segment WPTF did on QDR’s sign off in 1984. #WQDR youtu.be/UWWx48hw22g

(2/2) QDR had roughly one month to say goodbye to their listeners. They made the best of that time by throwing the rules out the window. Former DJs returned to the roost, album sides were played in the middle of the afternoon, and song constraints were lifted. #WQDR

(1/4) 42 years ago last night I sat in front of my stereo in stunned silence as WQDR, my favorite radio station of all time, faded to black. After 11+ years as an AOR station the decision was made to flip formats to Country. In the current commercial radio environment there would be no notice. #WQDR

(1/2) Jimmy Buffett passed away 3 years ago today at 76. One of my older brothers introduced me to his music in 1974 when I was 12. I immediately went out & purchased the first one of his albums I could find which was A White Sport Coat & A Pink Crustacean, his first for ABC/Dunhill Records.

(3/4) This was a different R.E.M. but I didn’t view them as sell outs or anything of the sort. It was a continuing evolution of their sound. I loved them no less. They reached Top 40 radio. They would soon be on the cover of Rolling Stone, who declared them “America’s Best Rock n’ Roll Band.”

(2/2) Saying that I enjoy some of the music isn’t an endorsement of his behavior is often a futile response. My record collection is rife with artists that’ve exhibited less than acceptable behavior. If I stopped listening to them because of it there wouldn’t be much left to listen to.
