R.E.M. announced they were disbanding 15 years ago today. In ‘83 I was drawn in by “Laughing.” As I dove deeper I was captivated not just by the sound but also the mystique. Shadows, catacombs, kudzu, a rustic pastoral landscape of sound that was at once ancient & contemporary. youtu.be/KStirqnmD6Y

(1/6) Lynyrd Skynyrd’s One More From the Road was released 50 years ago yesterday when I was 14. That Christmas I received that record & Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains the Same as gifts from my parents. #MusicSky #Skynyrd #OneMoreFromTheRoad

(1/4) 42 years ago last night I sat in front of my stereo in stunned silence as WQDR, my favorite radio station of all time, faded to black. After 11+ years as an AOR station the decision was made to flip formats to Country. In the current commercial radio environment there would be no notice. #WQDR

(1/2) Jimmy Buffett passed away 3 years ago today at 76. One of my older brothers introduced me to his music in 1974 when I was 12. I immediately went out & purchased the first one of his albums I could find which was A White Sport Coat & A Pink Crustacean, his first for ABC/Dunhill Records.

(1/4) For many of us this is where it began, staying up past our bedtime listening to a transistor radio underneath the covers. I soon graduated to a radio on my bedside table where I would listen all night.

Lifes Rich Pageant at 40 (supper side) (1/6) I remember making “Begin the Begin” the lead track on the b-side of the mixtape I made back then. The same older brother who seemed to enjoy listening to Murmur & Reckoning when I would spin them at his house years earlier dove for the eject button. #rem

Today I found out the car everyone was so kind to help me raise money for after my wreck in 2023 is beyond repair. Unfortunately, I’m still in the same financial situation I was back then. I put a link to my Venmo in my bio but certainly understand if no one is able to help out again. Thanks.

A hero of mine. Reading about her at the Dust & Grooves website led me to her Classic Album Sundays series & then down the “deep listening” rabbit hole. I tried to arrange an event in Raleigh but was unable to get the planets to align. I staged my own but it didn’t really work. tinyurl.com/3acwk4n2

I was 24 at the time. The first track I heard was “Voice of Harold” on WRDU’s Future Classics. Up to this point the only b-side I owned was “Toys in the Attic” from the 12” version of “Fall On Me.” I first learned of R.E.M.’s numerous b-sides thanks to the Pageantry tour program I purchased in ‘86.

I first heard this on WQDR who were also playing deep cuts from the album such as “Pretty Persuasion.” It would not be until the release of the Succumbs video compilation in 1987 that I’d see the video. I bought Reckoning shortly after it came out from Sound Shop at Vernon Park Mall in Kinston.

A haunting version that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since I first heard it last night. She inhabits the song in her own way without really altering the original arrangement. A rare feat, at least to my ears.

The kids are alright. They don’t need to be introduced to music from the past to validate the belief by older generations that they’re not lost just because they like an artist from the past. What a load of hogshit.
