After I completed @akrennmair.bsky.social’s excellent Bavarian White Beer, I had many questions about the author behind the book. Andreas is doing wonderful, essential historical research, and I wanted to know more about his background, life, and process.

You need to come back to the U.S. West Coast, where the hazies are a lot drier, more bitter, and therefore toothsome and balanced. They do still feature the tropical fruit aromas and flavors we all love, though.* I agree that those thick, sweet versions are a mess. _______ *okay, *most*

I’m very sorry for your loss. That trend blew through the US and is now basically absent (west coast, anyway).

Also, I am now very nostalgic for bottles. I love John’s placement of the cap. Ah, bottle caps, those inch-wide opportunities for class and branding!

It’s fun to consider things that were once the future and never came to be. Our minds smooth out the history, forgetting that we once bought into a world in which saisons, smoothie sours, and Belgian IPAs were big styles. What might have been…

A sharply-observed note from @thebeernut.bsky.social : “[I]tbelongs, bringing exactly the right mix of Belgian strong golden ale and American IPA. This used to be the future of beer, and now it's pleasingly retro.”

Here’s @evanrail.bsky.social on the evolving scene in Czechia. “With more than 40 IBUs but only about 3 percent ABV, Únětický’s version might be the apex of the hoppy-but-light trend. Hostomice’s 7°P Fabián clocks in with a similarly humulone-heavy ratio of 33 IBUs and just 2.9 percent ABV.”

Smaller Czech breweries are embracing an emerging trend: lighter lagers of 7°P and 8°P, packed with hops and often brewed in ways that defy the country’s usual methods.

This article, built entirely around personal anecdotes and folks opposed to alcohol, certainly doesn’t match my own experience. (And I just had a close friend give up alcohol.) But it is squarely in the media zeitgeist for bashing booze.

I totally get that, and I am very sympathetic to the Irish perspective here. It’s a relatively small brand in the U.S., and beloved in the way Americans cherish shamrocks and leprechauns—and their own (often invented) Irish heritage. We are a bunch of foolish romantics.

Jeff Alworth @beervana.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But do the mass of Irish drinkers want choice? (Not rhetorical.) I think of Czechia and Bavaria, places not noted for flamboyant taplists, and I can think of few places I’d rather drink.
