the focus on 'men's loneliness' and centering cis-male experiences isn't bc of a need to address an unnecessary woe they suffer, either - its an important facet of the patriarchy and how they maintain control. this piece describes it better than i can - butchanarchy.noblogs.org/post/2024/09...

It is reductive to say that cis men are not allowed to experience or express their emotions under patriarchy, as is commonly claimed. Cis men are not only allowed but encouraged to express any and all emotions under patriarchy. What they are actually discouraged from doing is expressing emotions in ways that do not serve to differentiate them from women and other marginalized genders. Cis men can be angry, just not in the way women are angry. They can be sad and even cry, but just not in the way queers do. They are encouraged to have and express emotions by patriarchy, but only in ways that refer to that system of power.

In practice this looks less like the total and constant emotional suppression for cis men many liberal feminists articulate and more like the stratification of emotional and reproductive labor: the product of a society in which emotional and caring labor is heavily gendered and cis men depend on their ability to constantly differentiate themselves from women and other marginalized genders to access patriarchal power, and thus the wealth extracted by that system. In the arenas where they struggle and posture for power with other cis men they are indeed frequently emotionally stifled and struggle to express the fullness of their authenticity with each other, but this itself is because such authenticity would place them in closer proximity to queerness in the eyes of other cis men and thus disadvantage them in that power struggle. Among youth and gender marginalized people, however, cis men can generally unleash any emotional storm they want, are even encouraged to do so by patriarchal gender scripts, with the expectation of receiving unconditional support and bottomless empathy in return. All this with little to (frequently) no acknowledgment that the maGes providing them with emotional and reproductive support have complex emotions, needs, and inner lives of their own.

Just last year, medtech lobbyist group Advamed sent a 57 page comment (www.advamed.org/member-cente...) in response to the HHS RFI on deregulation, pushing for even more. Despite enormous cuts to the HHS + FDA, they continue to claim that the industry is being 'stifled' by over-regulation (10/11)

The continued ability of medtech companies to make rapid, significant, and sometimes transformational advances in medtech depends upon a fair and reasonable regulatory system."

my robot girlfriend #8 - it started with a crush. a four panel comic featuring fink and remi. in the first panel, the pair are snuggling with fink over the top of remi. in the second panel, remi is rubbing at a spot behind fink's ear, saying "mmmm, what's this little thing here? a love button?" fink responds with "no, don't" but is cut off. in the next panel, a loud sound effect stating Sleep Mode Activated appears, with Fink's eyes going black. in the next and last panel, fink falls and crushes poor remi.

wanted to talk about this somewhere bc i am starting to recover from another round of this, so i posted it to my practically empty tumblr CW/TW: suicidal ideation, suicide

one of the worst things about living with suicidal ideation is that when it comes up, there are very limited places to talk about it. you know full well that it's scary to hear from someone you care about, but in the moment, it also feels like one of the only options left. at least, it did for me. when the thoughts started becoming regular in my late teens, i learned quickly that if i brought it up, i'd generally get one of two responses - "you're doing this for attention" or "you need to get professional mental help."

the first response slowly chipped away at me and made me feel deeply guilty and angry at myself. i felt selfish and horrible just for thinking about it. those feelings fed into the suicidal thoughts, and made it all feel more intense. the second response taught me that the only viable help was with strangers, and required resources and connections that i rarely had access to. it made me feel like a burden, and reinforced a lot of deeply painful views i had on myself and my inherent lack of value in the world.

for most of my life, when the feelings arose i would instinctively pull back from people. i would give scripted responses when approached. i resisted the urge to ask for help. i hid. it quickly became an internal struggle, because to take it outside of myself would only make it worse. eventually, the solution to the problem became the problem itself.

i have survived three attempts. i know i am lucky to still be here. it's taken a lot of time, but i have found the support of a handful of caring people who i've learned i can talk to about it. i have a therapist i can trust. but i still have the urge to pull away. to hide. to take it all on myself. i don't know if those feelings will ever go away. i feel anxious just writing this. but i know the thoughts won't ever go away, so i want to talk about it. even if i get told the same thing again.
