I agree he'd do a fantastic MACBETH, but I feel like, given Kurosawa's THRONE OF BLOOD and Coen's THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH, I'd actually considering handing him KING LEAR if THE NORTHMAN counts as his HAMLET already. Not a lot of KING LEAR adaptations out there.

And yes, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER is pretty awful on the whole rewatching. A few standout episodes, for sure, and you can definitely make a case that it brought some unique narrative tricks and flourishes via the storytelling conceit, but man, did it hate women. And it REALLY hated trans women.

I do think MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE holds up better. Like, the revival's Kelly material feels very consistent with that episode where Jessica tricks Malcolm and Reese into thinking the other's gay BUT they're actually not dicks to each other for it and reasonably understanding and accepting about it.

Honestly, I do find it a little funny how the mid-2020s revivals for both MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE and SCRUBS both bottom out to at least reasonably good and the OG versions of them are the big winners of that late-1990s/early-2000s era of sitcoms to my eyes. They definitely hold up for the most part.

I don't... hate those relationships, but it's frustrating how it's maddeningly clear how Wolfman nostalgia pushes the former two together and 2003 nostalgia pushes the latter two together, and they really fall into the artifice of the illusion of change mindset Stan Lee talked about.

Nah, unfortunately, it wasn't in the Wolfman run. A later one, but it definitely did give me that sense of Starfire having a very telling, distinct, character beyond Wolfman or 2003 nostalgia. I... well. All the power to you, J, but even Perez couldn't get me to continue reading that to a point. 🥺

I also do think her and Raven should've gone yuri, given the pages of them I read in the Wolfman run, instead of just re-heating the Starfire/Nightwing nachos, but really, Starfire herself is a neat character who should deserve better than constant nostalgia baiting.

Exactly. For me, my definitive image of Starfire as a unique character is her mercy-killing Deathstroke's ex-wife, which made me sit up, because it makes 100% sense with her backstory, that's an unrepentant beat you can't pull with Superman AND there's tension with Nightwing's no-kill rule in there.

Cregger strikes me as a director who uses narrative sleight-of-hands and less linear structures to obfuscate the fact that he doesn't have that much to actually SAY about his subjects. Which maybe it's not a bad thing if he just went more straightforwardly linear. It'd be more honest.
