Just saw YouTube is doubling viewership requirements for creators to be eligible for ad/premium revenue, which reinforces slop. Because the easiest way to hit either of these targets is to churn out the most low-effort shit possible. Investing time/effort on a single video is now much riskier.

YouTube’s new requirements to be eligible for ad revenue payouts and Premium payouts:

1,000 Subscribers (same as it previously was)

And either

8,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months. (Up from 4,000)

Or

20M qualified shorts views (Up from 10M)

Reimagining Deeper Well and the Branch Coral was a highlight of my 2.5D Omori project. :) I traded the dark skybox for Deep Well’s surreal bubbles, and skipping pixel sprites to figure out actual water shaders was absolute hell but so worth it.

Summer Game Fest had some great reveals, but starting the stream with Geoff showing off business metrics and talking about price points felt soulless. I don't care to watch a rich guy jerk off to capitalism on a stage. There are better ways to highlight a great year in gaming than an annual report.

I love Pokopia and finished the story last night, it’s definitely my favorite Pokémon game in *years.* I really appreciated that it leaned into more of the sci-fi aspects of the series again vs the “here’s the 5000th legendary that’s also god, and its gonna be our whole story.” It’s my current GOTY.

OTHERWORLD from Omori in 2.5D! This is one of the biggest, and one of my favorite, models I worked on for the series. It was also the one that presented the most... learning opportunities. 🙈 #omori #omorifanart

OTHERWORLD from the game OMORI. Becca has taken the original 2D pixel art game and shifted it into 2.5D, meaning (in this case) the world is 3D but the character models are in 2D still. OTHERWORLD looks like an adorable pink mountain town. While there are trash containers everywhere, there's also loads of dreamy pink trees, grass, and a fun space theme going on. The scene is lit to look like nighttime.

YouTube’s auto-reply feature (that I don’t use) is grossing me out. Originally the feature would just suggest the most generic replies possible, but they’ve clearly incorporated gen AI into it… and not only that, but it’s training off of how *I* respond to comments, without my consent.

More on my Omori in 2.5D project! The full model I made plus the original from the game, and then some stills from the actual video. :)

It's pink in tone and has random objects strewn about it, such as flowers, cards, and a baseball bat. In the back is a row of cabinets, where on top of them is a photo with candles next to is, a toaster, a mask, a present, and a blender. There is a rainbow staircase with a snake sitting on it, who is covered in clams. The staircase leads to a hallway and exit, that are filled with white light. To the right of the room is a TV and some posters of games that Becca likes- Paper Mario, Slay the Princess, Outer Wilds, and SOMA.

Neighbors Room as it is presented in the actual game, Omori. It is much brighter and is made entirely in 2D, pixel art.

A still from the actual video Becca used it in. It depicts the same room, but now there's a shadow standing before the main character. The room is also much dimmer, drawing attention to a picture frame on a cabinet, a TV in the front, and a hallway filled with white light in the back.

And another still from the 2.5D render. This time the player character is at the TV, which is lighting up the area around it with its light. There is a dialogue box that says, "Somebody sitting in a room playing a game."

Before and after color grading, featuring cat hair because I have a needy baby who especially loves when I wear dark clothes. I included more information about the color grading in the alt text if you're curious. :)

This is after! It is a much more high contrast shot that is very saturated with blues and purples, and it also made Becca's skin look less deathly pale.

Becca's notes:

I knew for Omori that I really wanted to pump up the blues and purples given the game's color palette and landed on this after a decent amount of messing around. I also bumped up the brightness right around my face while dropping the gamma and shadows in the background to make myself stand out a bit more. On top of that I verrrry slightly adjusted the shadows to be a bit more blue, so instead of being a flat black, you can pick up more blue in the tone. I was using 3 lights for this shot, a key light that basically made sure my face was lit up in a neutral color, then a fill light that softened the shadows a bit, and finally a 3rd light that was actually a little blue to create some dynamic colors in the shot. Then in the background is technically a fourth light from a lamp that is giving off a pink glow. Can't leave it all to the color grade to do :)

I'm taking a course on Blender right now and here are my first week's projects!! The house I nearly gave myself a heart attack because we had a time limit of one hour to do it and I thought, "hm I can totally add bay windows :)" I'm excited to see how much I improve by the end.

FINALLYYYY got my new series started. And for it, I made 2.5D renders of different locations in OMORI! Yes, I DID actually make all of this in Unity and Blender. I'll be posting more stills from other locations I recreated in the following weeks. I'm super happy with how all of this turned out. :)

Automatic dubbing has finally come for me. 🙃 I’m actually surprised they notified me about it at all, with steps on how to turn it off (not in the screenshot)… which I have now done.
