I spent more than a year reporting on this murder. I still have many questions about why he is still officially considered a John Doe, and why his killer was never prosecuted. Could the murderer have been protected? One note in the police file suggests he may have been a federal informant.

In this new investigation, Bellingcat and @thetimes.com reviewed public immigration records from the United Arab Emirates. We found that Christopher Kinahan Jr, son of cartel founder Christy Kinahan, was issued with a new visa less than two weeks ago, despite his status as a sanctioned individual.
The US government has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Christopher Kinahan Jr for participating in transnational organised crime, namely narcotics trafficking and money laundering.
