Just hanging out with @baradlab.com, getting our vaccines. I love vaccines! The joy of NOT getting the flu or COVID is priceless. (I also enjoy being free of measles, diphtheria, HPV, and all kinds of other nasties.)

In 1863, Harriet Tubman played a key role in the Combahee River Raid. She was the first woman to lead U.S. troops in an armed assault. She helped free 750 slaves in that one event. Her story is exactly the American history that Trump and Hegseth want to erase. She was a true American hero.

What evidence do we have of gender bias in research? Here is an example. The 4000 yo remains of a powerful, highly skilled, goldsmith (the Upton Lovell Shaman) were assumed for 200 yr to be male (see below). Nope. This powerful leader was female all along. archaeologymag.com/2026/07/bron...

The Oregon Garden in Silverton is worth a visit. This beautiful flower made me wonder if that fuzzy orange bit is meant to look like a caterpillar to attract a pollinator.

5y ago, on Jan.6, a violent mob, encouraged by Trump, tried to overthrow our government & subvert the will of the American people. Today I honor Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwards, who was wounded & fought bravely to protect our government. Thank you, Edwards, for your bravery & service.
Image courtesy of Wikipedia, which shows Edwards unconscious after being attached by January 6 rioters.

@compoundchem.com My 3.9 year old wanted me to read this to her last night. She thought the title was hilarious. She made up her own subtitle: "Why does honey make your toots smell?" I admit, I was stumped.

Today I am grateful for Maurice Hilleman. Dr. Hilleman developed >40 vaccines, including safe & effective vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis A and B, and chickenpox. Eight of his vaccines are still used today. His work has saved millions of lives and prevented so much suffering.

I showed my daughter my latest TLC results (lipid analysis in mycobacteria). I explained how the "fats" are separated. Then we did a little experiment so she could understand. So many skittles eaten before breakfast...

The US awards the Medal of Honor "to recognize American soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, guardians, and coast guardsmen who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor." Curious fact. Only 1 woman (of 3547) has been awarded it: Mary Edwards Walker. And the US tried to take hers back.

My family had purple cauliflower for dinner. The cooking water turned purple (because of anthocyanine). Then... I amazed my family with how the purple water acts as a pH indicator. Ta-dah! Check out the pretty colors!

Just finished reading this great book by @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social. I learned a lot and found it to be an excellent read. As a TB researcher, I am struck over and over again by how critical effective diagnosis and treatment are. TB kills over a million people EVERY YEAR. Fund TB research!

Roald Dahl was an outspoken advocate for the measles vaccine because his 7 yo daughter Olivia died from a measles infection. He published "Measles: A dangerous illness," to encourage children to be vaccinated. Read essay here: www.immunize.org/clinical/vac... Dahl family w/ Olivia holding puppy.

The current measles outbreak is a clear indicator of the incompetence of Kennedy and the Trump administration. 20% of measles cases include hospitalization. This is a highly contagious, deadly, VACCINE-PREVENTABLE disease. MAHA? I wish. (Getty image of baby with measles):

#Consequences Freezing funding for USAID already made the TB epidemic much worse. TB kills >1.2 million people a year (most deadly infectious disease). Loss of US funds has halted progress in Kenya- patients are no longer getting proper dx or treatment. Pic courtesy of @nytimes.com (Otieno).

This morning I'm thinking of Marty Goddard, who invented the first "Rape Kit" (1970s). The kit standardized collection of evidence and is still used today. *In keeping with long tradition, a man got the credit for this invention after Goddard conceived of the idea, shared it, and advocated for it.

I am torn between deep sadness and embarrassment that I didn't know who Gertrude Elion was until 10 minutes ago. Elion is a nobel-prize winning biochemist/pharmacologist who developed amazing drugs (anti-virals; anti-cancers) to benefit humanity. Thank you Elion for your contributions!
