I am therian but not a furry, and know several others who are the same. I'm not a transmedicalist, and I think furries are great, bit I don't really identify with furry culture, and do get frustrated at being treated like we are inherently the same.

Werewolf Wednesday

Who is the King of the forest? He is bred in the shadow of dense fir. Shaped by the coarse rock and sweeping valleys that make waves in the sea of trees. He comes down from his mountain throne to bless the living with fang and claw. To baptise in blood. See the lustre of his snowfall fur as he moves in the towering wood, swift as sunlight on a whispering stream. The jewels of his eyes and the ivory of his teeth. He wears the crown of the moon and sings a dirge to the dawn. His voice is Death to them.
It hangs over the valley, his sonorous howl, like the swollen moon. He slinks back to the woods, sated. A shrill scream erupts from the village outskirts as a mother wakes to an empty, crimson cot. The men rouse from their beds. There is a murmur amongst them as they gather before the church with torches, axes, guns and knives. Grief. Rage. Fear. In the wake of the forest men are driven to desperation. They have tolerated the harrying of their livestock, the loss of their foals. Now the fiend slips silently into their homes to prey on their children. The father is with them. Though they swear otherwise, he knows he will not find his infant alive.

Yes for sure! I hate the way hunters talk about coyotes. They may be thriving in numbers, but they deserve some kind of regulation on the ways they are hunted and how many you can kill. It especially frustrates me because their excessive hunting is usually justified as being for ranchers safety-

The hunting itself is extremely against my morals, but I came into possession of the hide in what I think is about the most ethical way I could have. But I still have mixed feelings about it. Point being thay grey areas do pop up often

Hunting at all, or much of any African trophy hunting for that matter. But it was just given to me by another taxidermist because otherwise those parts were just going to be thrown away. That taxidermist didn't make the choice for the hyena to be hunted, neither did I, and it would have been trashed

Hmmm yea, when its a gift I think thats a little harder because technically they didn't intentionally support poaching, someone else did, but it was still on their behalf. There can be a lot of grey areas in that space, for example I have several pieces of hyena hide. I don't agree with hyena

Conservation successes from the left. Wolf populations aren't actually stable enough for hunting, its a shitty aggressive political move, and for that reason I don't think (new, American) wolf pelts can be ethical. In contrast to species like whitetail deer that are overpopulated and edible

There is lots of hunting that is legal but, in my opinion, not ethical. I think it is important to look into the possible political influences behind the conservation status and hunting practices of each animal. For example, wolf hunting is increasingly legal because of conservative attacks on-

My ideal answers are roadkill, antique/secondhand furs, natural deaths in captive animals, hide from animals that are being eaten (be that food industry or hunting), and hide from population management minded hunting and trapping.

Therian, professional taxidermist, and former wildlife biologist here - my answer? It depends on a lot of factors. Right off the bat I will say that spiritually cleansed doesn't do jack diddly squat to change where the fur is from. I do spiritual work with my furs but that doesn't change sourcing.

It opens you up to instead start caring about how people engage with their kintype, and what experiences it brings, which I think are far more valuable. Feed your euphoria and deepen your bonds with your animal self. Build community with those who do the same. How they got there doesn't matter.
