BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Pretty much every time I get why they would assume I’ve read the thing they’re talking about, which makes it funnier. Like yeah you should be surprised I haven’t read basically any Kierkegaard given my whole thing, frankly I’m just as surprised 010
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 30/09/2026One experience I genuinely like just cause it’s always funny to me is someone asking me if I’ve read something with the assumption I had, and then getting a very befuddled “really???” when I inform them I haven’t 111

BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 20/09/2026What level of terminally straight edge is it where I’m really heavily considering getting a swatch? 010
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Mets really have one of the worst fan bases in sports. You would think the Mets have the historical record of the Yankees with how fucking toxic Mets fans get 000
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 16/09/2026But my sports thinking has always been, in every instance, that you root for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back. Supporting your guys even when they leave is one thing. Booing your team because of a bad result for “one of your guys” is another. 000
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Seeing so many people angry at Manaea for being upset at the fan reaction to Alonso as though fans didn’t boo Tong, as though a bunch of people didn’t walk out of the stadium after Pete’s last at bat during a game. I’d hope the players would be upset at that. 100
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 16/09/2026People are saying the fan reaction to Alonso isn’t “about the Mets players on the field, just Stearns” but then they were booing Tong as he walked Alonso. I love Alonso. Booing your rookie pitcher during one of the best starts of his career is insane. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Big problem with just how the internet is used in general. Endless dunking instead of actual conversation. 010
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 15/09/2026This doesn’t make the sentence or paragraph better either! “A gravitational pole in the force field of twenty-first century politics” sucks. But it doesn’t suck because of the physical law of gravity, it sucks because it’s obtuse, much like the people complaining about magnetic polarity. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 15/09/2026The person who made this thread clearly has some kind of reasoned critique even if I can’t fully judge it just because I don’t know the book being critiqued, but the people endlessly hammering on about gravity not having polarity are being intentionally obtuse just to get in cheap shots. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 15/09/2026This is a poorly written and I know nothing about this book and don’t really care too, but I’m losing my mind at how many people are taking issue with “gravitational pole” when the author clearly mean “a pole things gravitate towards” and not some scientific metaphor about the force of gravity. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026And so by the end of the narrative they’ve fallen into his trap. He gets them to admit something they knew but were denying for the sake of tradition. The idols cannot even move, and so they cannot answer prayers or intercede. 010
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026The idolaters find the destroyed idols with Abraham standing there and they accuse him of destroying them. Abraham then says “oh no, I didn’t destroy the idols. The big idol did it. See, it’s even holding an ax.” And the idolaters respond with “that’s ridiculous. The idols can’t move.” 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026They can’t answer prayers, they can’t intercede, they can’t even move. They’re dead constructs. The idolaters dismiss him and leave. Abraham then takes an ax and destroys all of the idols except for the biggest one, and he then puts the ax into the hands of the biggest idol. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026The Quran is full of these little encounters of people demonstrating the truth of the message. One of my favorite bits is this story involving Abraham. In the narrative, Abraham is arguing with the idolaters of his village that their idols are inanimate and cannot actually do anything. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026It’s just a super flimsy argument and so obviously secondary to the matters of religion we’d typically think of as important. And personally, one of the things I find so appealing about Islam is how much the Quran emphasizes your natural lights. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Now some people will choose as a matter of faith to trust the tradition and believe in the miracle of the splitting of the moon. That’s fine. What’s weird to me is that people will try to use it for apologetics, or would demand someone believe in it in order to affirm Muhammad’s prophecy at all. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Instead the Quran makes a point to focus on various natural signs. The fact that you have a night to rest, that the winds will carry ships across the water, the beauty of the natural world. These are all “signs for a people who know,” and none of them are supernatural. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026That’s true, but the Quran repeatedly mentions people denying G-d’s signs related to the end times, and those verses aren’t tied to any miracle claims on the part of the Prophet. The Quran also repeatedly chastises disbelievers for demanding signs. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Personally, I don’t think it makes sense to read the Quranic passage as talking about a miracle. It seems to quite obviously be talking about the end times, and so I’d think it’s apocalyptic imagery first and foremost. People argue that the following verses are about denying signs. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026The way the story goes, Muhammad is challenged by the Meccan pagans to give them a supernatural sign to prove the veracity of his prophecy. Muhammad answers the challenge by causing the moon to split in two pieces. Muhammad then tells them “bear witness to this.” 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026The splitting of the moon is a miracle supposed to have been performed by Muhammad in the Islamic tradition. It’s derived from a line in the Quran that says “the Hour has drawn near and the moon has split.” The tradition ends up developing the story through the hadith collections. 130
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026So even though these people were Muslims and believed Muhammad was the Messenger of G-d they were deemed, by this other Muslim, to be denying Muhammad prophecy because they didn’t believe certain miracle claims were historical (like the splitting of the moon). 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Recently experienced a thing where this one Muslim accused another group of Muslims of “denying the prophecy of Muhammad” because they didn’t believe in traditional miracle attributions to the Prophet (mind you, the Quran itself doesn’t offer any miracle claims for him). 111
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026And what’s even more strange is that various religious traditions all seem extremely aware that miracle claims look a lot like magic! The Quran for example has a pretty common refrain where prophets are dismissed by people who say they’re just sorcerers, it’s just sorcery, etc. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Like as an example different Islamic philosophers used miracles as a criteria for prophecy. A prophet has to come with miracles in order to demonstrate their veracity. This just simply can’t be a serious piece of evidence for prophecy. There are just other more plausible explanations. 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Miracles are such a uniquely terrible way of proving the existence of G-d or the truth of any given religious claim that it’s honestly shocking how often it seems to still get used by certain groups contemporarily or historically as an argument. 110

BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 07/09/2026By this I mean what Goff says in the post, that if you accept something strange and unnatural really did occur, something we simply can’t explain using typical naturalistic tools, that there are other supernatural explanations more immediately plausible than Catholicism 000
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 07/09/2026I disagree with Goff about all powerful and all loving G-d being disconfirmed (though I recognize the strong objections that exist to the position), but I do agree that accepting Catholic miracle claims isn’t good reason to accept Catholicism 110

BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 07/09/2026In all of this discussion that’s been happening about miracle claims and whether Catholicism really has the strongest miracle evidence compared to other religions I’m really happy to see Philip Goff coming in to say the obvious thing about miracles that everyone should be saying but no one is 110

BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 01/09/2026It has been pointed out to me by a friend that Gillian Rose and some of her students take a sort of Pascalian reading of Hegel based on this general description of Pascal’s project. I need to read Gillian Rose more seriously than I have, but I find that idea compelling 000
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 01/09/2026He sees that modern philosophy has removed G-d from the picture except as brute mechanism, and this means the death of our notions of ethics, justice, truth, and in fact rationality itself. So in order to preserve reason we must preserve theism. And so we get the Wager 110
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 01/09/2026He thinks in a sense that the project of modern philosophy is self defeating, that the undoing of the older mode of reason spells the death of rationality itself 100
BearPascal @bearpascal.bsky.social · 01/09/2026But this assumption is wrong, and it is obviously wrong if you take Pascal’s context into account. He isn’t writing just another argument among arguments for theism. What he’s actually doing is trying to save both theism and reason as a whole from the threat of skepticism 100
