PS this is often dismissed by pro-Europeans in the UK, but public statements really matter. Europeans want to hear actual positivity about Europe from a UK PM PPS but he has got people talking about UK relations PPPS what happens when Burnham is knocked back is the key, that's when options open

I would add, there doesn't appear to be space for anything new on the agenda this autumn. Which makes Burnham's proposed speech in November on Europe definitely worth watching. He has to take a risk. Ends

Tony Blair rejoins the growing voices of those calling for an abandonment of Labour EU red lines and reversing Brexit. But in a symbol of all that was wrong with the Remain campaign, he does so saying the UK should only rejoin if its demands on EU reform are met 🧐
So, this is not about rerunning the debates of 2016 but taking a new approach rooted in the reality of 2026.

There is no point in inching towards Europe as we feel what British public opinion might accommodate. We should be clear that we want back into a formal relationship with the EU. But it must be a Europe on a credible path to reform, a Europe of nation states, a Europe capable of being a genuine global power. Otherwise, though Britain should continue to cooperate with the EU where it is in our mutual interest to do so, and though we should always remain open to changing circumstances, Britain will show that it can and is prepared to remain independent.
