World-traveling geek in my 50s. Far too much of my luggage is taken up by books and dice. Yes, I also own a Kindle, but sometimes a fella's gotta have books.

I don't know, I think that may be too subtle point and lost on some people.

And, just like the real Florida, people will be insane enough to drive in those winds. Will there be a celebrity television meteorologist named, um, I dunno, Kim Jantore or something? And when Kim shows up, you know it's suddenly gotten dangerous?

Half of the population of Doral, Florida is from Venezuela, yet the city voluntarily signed an agreement with ICE. Now that the mayor and other politicians are receiving backlash for signing the agreement, they are trying to falsely claim the state of Florida obligated the city to sign on.

Florida City That Willingly Signed Deal With ICE Finds Itself in Crisis
Half the population of Doral, Florida, is from Venezuela. Why haven’t its leaders rescinded their deal with ICE?

This is part of a series of terrible arguments that people make that they think are real gotchas. Yesterday, someone said "I get why women would choose the bear, but then why haven't they? Why haven't all women walked into the woods?"

From A Man For All Seasons: "There are those like Norfolk who follow me because I wear the crown, those like Master Cromwell who follow me because they are jackals with sharp teeth and I'm their tiger, there's a mass that follows me because it follows anything that moves." Sad that it's still true.

A small quality-of-life thing I recently discovered is that if there is some artwork you really like or some photos that make you happy you can get them printed as a custom calendar (there are several print sites that do this) and every month a lovely new bit of joy is there for you on your wall.

"No one could have foreseen this!" said the subset of geeks who have ignored every piece of geek written or screen literature about the subject ever, including the non-fiction stuff. When you dismiss a worry as a fairy tale, you don't get to complain when the fairy tale turns out to have a basis.

It really gives the game away when the anti trans orgs are calling the election of the neo nazi party in Germany a "glimmer of hope."
A screenshot of an online article headline from "Inspecting Gender" by Genspect. The main heading reads: "Germany: A Glimmer of Hope for Sex Realists?" Below the title, the summary text asks: "Is the victory of the AfD in Germany a dark day for democracy or a glimmer of hope for sex realists? By David Allison." The bottom metadata displays the Genspect logo, "5 hours ago," and a "Listen" audio option button. In the top right corner, there is a teal "Subscribe" button alongside a circular profile avatar.

the problem is that there is now a middle generation of women who were not exposed themselves as children but who have also refused the vaccine, and those women are now of child-bearing age so they lack either a natural or acquired immunity to protect their children in the womb before they are born.

Nope. I tried on Lanterns. I really did. I gave it most of the first season, unless I'm misreading how many episodes they intend. But sometime around Ep 5 or Ep 6, I realized, just ... nope. And I cannot explain how sad that makes me feel, as someone who started reading comics in the early 70s.

E.B. White established this in 1949! Move on already!
Screenshot from E.B. White's essay "Here is New York": "There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born here, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter —the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. Of these three trembling cities the greatest is the last— the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York's high-strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements. Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion."

I have heard that Track AIPAC also lumps all "similar" (i.e., supportive of Israel in any way even if vocally opposed to the current Israeli government and its actions) lobbies together, but nothing definitive on this. Given that there *are* pro-Israel-but-anti-war groups, this idea rankles if true.

(Yes, yes, even before the regulatory capture, the duopoly caused some pretty bad binary choice decisions and non-binary 'reasonable man' compromises, but the capture of the marketplace is then what made future change and correction less likely)

The Original Sin of U.S. politics is in allowing for the establishment of two and only two political parties which were then given effectively regulatory capture over the rest of the process of establishing parties and entering them to compete in the political marketplace. Yeah.
