The thing that is so compelling about Commander (IMO) is the freedom from the all or nothing outcomes of heads-up play. Nobody sits down in a pod and expects to win the table. That is liberating and it allows you to pursue other paths to reward over the course of a game.

Btw if you ever want to see some Alpha Playtest cards in person, the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester has some in a small exhibit. I believe the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle has some as well (they did the last time I went).
