On the one hand this is a silly thing to have made. On the other hand, it’s a silly thing to have made.

Ok yeah, this is good. Happy with this. Got real lucky with this walnut, and I’m pleased with how it turned out.
A walnut desktop in closeup with sunlight hitting it. The brain is relatively straight with lots of blonde in it. A further shot of the desk set up with monitor, chair, and laptop. A plant sits to the left of the desk. An art print hangs above the desk between two open windows.A view of the desk from the upper right.

This didn’t come out too bad. (I don’t like the legs. They were cheap, though. Will replace them if they annoy me too much.)
A walnut desk, 2’ by 4’. It sits on gross hairpin gold legs that wobble. The desk is pressed against a white concrete wall. A view of the desk with an office chair in front of it. The desk is situated between two windows There is a Liz New art print above the desk of a young boy in front of a field of old truck cabs. A caption reads “evaporate and yield to a subdivision.”

“Blade jammed” on lowering, yeah that’d frickin do it. (I lost CFM yesterday and didn’t notice which explains a bit of this , but I also clearly need to invest in a zero clearance insert here!)
A Festool table saw upside down with its bottom off. It’s full of dust and crap. The bottom blade housing, and vacuum tube. It’s full of compacted saw dust. The blade housing flipped open, lots of saw dust and thin strips of wood. It’s a mess. 5 pieces of wood shavings pulled out of the blade housing. Yeesh.

Did some decorating.
A small black refrigerator sits in some wire shelving. The shelves also contain snacks - pretzels, Slim Jim’s, a box of chocolate candy bars.

A model of a scifi tank sits in the fridge - the Militech Chimera tank from Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty.

Stickers on the fridge: Cthulhu; a Radical Edward smiley icon from Cowboy Bebop looks at a yellow floppy disk with “Hack the Planet” written on it; Godzilla “destroy all fascists”; “Our joy is a sword” trans colors, by Sen of Dresden Codak; Gideon the Ninth skull from the Locked Tomb Pod; origami unicorn from Blade Runner; some cyberpunk skull I got somewhere I can’t recall.

Really hoping to finish my first desk tomorrow. (I really need one for the Woofice.)
A walnut five panel glue up on a work table. It is 2’ by 4’. The walnut has many blond accents running up its grain. The right most panel has cloudy grain, instead of the blond stripes. It is clamped in four universal clamps. There is blue tape marking each section which shows which sides needed floating tenons.

A bunch of random woodshop stuff is in the background.

I got a new friend this week. 6” Delta jointer from 1953. Bought it from someone in his 70s who had it for 40y (and still had the original manual!) He added a door / cover for the pulley and his own dust collection port.

“Whimsy shelf” for our entryway. Birthday activity. Designed by Mx15, but everyone helped and painted backgrounds. Mistakes mine. (I hate drywall.) Will be filled with whimsical things, I am assured!
A box embedded in a wall. Front door to the left. Light switch to the right. The box is framed with beveled walnut. There is a somewhat impressionistic landscape painting slotted into the back of the box. Four blue shelves are mounted into the box sides.A further shot of the box. The full entry way, putting the box in context - front door, pictures, a bunch of shoes. The box again, with the door open, sunlight on the box lighting it up.The original design on a pad of paper, and the four paintings sit on a work table. A orange and green landscape with a path running through it, a beach with grass and sunlight breaking through clouds, a grid of tiny art I don’t know how to describe, and another blue and green landscape

Forever wondering where my big square is because it is now CAMOUFLAGED
A work table with a tool wall. The tool wall is painted dark red. There are various tools - spirit levels, winding sticks, pencils, chisels, marking gauges, a big panel gauge, etc, hung on French cleats. There is also, allegedly, a giant 2 foot red Woodpeckers square in the top left corner. Except if it were there it’d be almost the same color as the red paint.

Ok, well. It’s top heavy and all, but put some drawers of crap in there and lop off the slop and it should be fine. It’ll live parked against the wall 99% of its life. This plywood is uh, real busy (if trippy) and might get painted. Just need to finish this one and build two more…
A work table with a prototype type tool wall clamped to it. The table is 4x1.5(ish), just a frame with a plywood table top and frame. It sore on four orange casters. The “tool wall” is two 8’ 2x4s with two pieces of 2x4 plywood clamped vertically to them. This affords 4x of wall space.

The plywood that makes up the backing has some very striking grain patterns. It’s weird and sort of off putting.

Cut/sanded some handles because OSB (which I used under the 1/4” ply top) is splinter hell.

Basically living the so much room for activities meme. Getting the workbench up those steps could have taught a Dalek a thing or two.

Went to the Maine Woodworking Event this weekend. Rex Krueger gave the last talk on his new sawbench. Good time! One of his sawbenches was the second thing I ever made and as jank as it turned out it’s still solid a year later. Works great, use it all the time. Tempted to make this new version!

Consciousness, if you could call it that, returns in the staccato stop start of a film melting in front of a projector. Her first cohesive thought mirrors that of any newborn. What the fuck?

Two faceless monsters peer down at her from this cacophony. She can sense their gaze, but not perceive it. She can smell the magnetic fields stitching her mind back together.

The situation can wait. The straps holding her arms and head in place can wait. There’s only one real question, ever, but especially here in the face of this impossible resurrection. Pushes through a half collapsed larynx: “Why?”

The monster on the right simply says: “Necessary.”

Fine. Asshole. “How?”

The monster on the left shrugs, its blue medical gown crinkling with the motion. “The usual way. Time. Motivation.”

“Why am I still me?” The process should have completely overwritten who she had been, burning her away and laying down this new thing.

The faceless body on the right responds. “Our progenitors lacked the courage of their convictions.”

The one on the left: “Or a failsafe. In case of collapse. Better this than scribbled brains. Stripes of personality, just noise.”

But she can remember who she was. Is, now, again, and it is not better. Falling into nothing, into static would have been more just.

The right: “Or something stranger. A rewriting, before dissolution. We are not capable, now, of knowing.”“Family? We’re not even strangers to each other. We’re just organs, components, of someone else who turns out didn’t even want us.”

“We do not know why the mesh derez’d -“

“How do we even know we were hived up? That it wasn’t all a scam. We have no memories, just a bunch of lost time and weird broken shit in our heads. It looked legit, but it could have been anything. A cult. Organ rippers. And we were all exactly the kind of people no one would ever miss, because we didn’t want to be dead but we sure as shit didn’t want to be living any more. Perfect victims.”

“We have an exceptional amount of data that proves the process did work exactly as described. We were indeed a godlike hive mind of incredible intelligence.”

“So show it to me.”

“None of us are capable of comprehending it any longer.”

“This doesn’t stink to you?”The ships computer was running part of the Hive when the mesh dissolved.

“How long?”

“36 years.”

The number was meaningless. She didn’t have anywhere to go. Or be. But obviously the question was expected. “Why have we been sitting here for 36 years?”

“Do you know I’ve had this conversation 213 times? This is the 214th. So far only 12 of you have managed to get past this next bit without breaking down. Everyone else has gone back into the freezer. Are you lucky 13, do you think?”

She says nothing. Waits. What else is there, now?

“Fine. It took me nearly 20 years to build myself back together from the detritus that was in flight when the mesh crashed. Just … bits of people. It took a while to create anything that would cohere. I don’t like talking about it, actually.”

“Clearly.”

“Mm. The rest of the time I was thawing people out. Trying to get a crew, but it has not gone well. And it’s not like any of us have anywhere to be.”

“So why bother.”

“Now that’s the real question. I made sure the desire to understand what happened to us was built pretty deep into my structure. I have to know. My profile of you says you will also obsess over it. And then there’s the artifact.”

(Profiles? Why? We were gone, who cares what the meat had been?)

“We’re literally in the middle of interstellar space, light years from anything in any direction.”

“Don’t you know so much for someone who was a godsicle 10 minutes ago. We’re even farther off the path than you think. We detected something and diverted. We found something. Presumably it’s related to why we’re I and not we.”

I hate resawing and clearly I got impatient here but all’s well that planes well.
A 3/4” thick 14” board being held in a Moxon vise on a workbench. A Temple Tools ryoba saw sits on the vise table. A Festool vacuum hose hangs on the bench in the background.

The board has been sawn down its length, not particularly cleanly, so we end up with 3/8th-ish thick boards. The board split apart, both sides sitting next to each other on a bench. They are ragged on their faces. A couple chisels and a heavy hammer sit next to them, which is why they are ragged. Split rather than sawn all the way through. The boards cleaned up and pressed together into a panel. They are somewhat book matched. Some light cutter marks from the planer are visible.

Mx15 asked for a shadow box to put into the wall by the front door so they could make “whimsical dioramas.” Milled and fit it tonight and brought it home from the shop to confer with the client. Goth baddie walking to South St gave my clamped up box a big ol’ side eye.

I call it the Mullet Workbench. Business up front, party in the back. It’s not done. And has some Problems. I need to flush it up and install the leg and tail vises, and a cabinet. But after three months of work this feels like a milestone. It’s level and square-enough. And weighs 190lbs. Whew.

A story in four parts.
A 6x2 foot workbench top on another table. It is on two components but is clamped up. A 26” red Woodpecker square sits on the near end, giving a reference straight edge. The ends of the bench top are uneven and a mess.A Festool track saw and track now sit on the end of the bench top, width-wise.A Western style hand saw sits in the 2” kerf left by the track saw. A Temple Tools ryoba sits on the bench to the side.

The blade of the ryoba is too thin for the track saw kerf and had too much slop, so I switched to my Spear & Jackson saw, which fit much more single in the cut, making it more likely I would get a clean piece at the end The off cuts of the bench top end sit on the bench top. The end of the bench is now smooth, even, and square. The S&J saw sits on the bench next to the off cuts.

Because of this mess (2” drift, look at middle top) in this 106 lbs bench top, I got a track saw because I won’t fix this by hand and stay sane. Never used a track saw. Ripped the 8 boards for the remaining two legs in an hour as a test. Festool makes some nice stuff, as advertised.
