Finally saw Mandalorian and Grogu with the family, that was a blast! That character really works the best when he's falling into standalone adventures. That movie could have come right out of a Star Wars RPG campaign.

Interesting. I know I'm biased but I think mine is better, just from mouthfeel.

Or worse, like the games "Postal" and "Hatred."

For me, grimdark is like Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, or The Dark Knight Returns. There's art there. I'm talking "so utterly bleak it becomes an unintentional parody of grimdark." Like Marvel's Ruins comic, "Funny Games," or most things by Garth Ennis. Warhammer 40k really plays in this space.

Is there a term for when a story or setting is so over-the-top edgy and grimdark that it becomes ridiculous? If not, I humbly submit "grimdork."

I'm not a #romantasy author, but it's amusing when people pretend it's a surprising or shocking new trend indicating whatever. My brother in Reorx, 87% of chat rooms / message boards in the 90's and early 00's were group improv romantasy sessions. Some of us were even sexy Jedi. Not me, of course

His horror is often rife with heroic characters trying to do something about the problem. And often winning. But it's the standing up that's the scariest part. The being true. The refusal to look away. It's why he's top of the mountain, for me. (2/2)

As a huge Stephen King reader and fan, his stories are so effective because the real horror is just the truth at max resolution. Our world is scary. There are terrible people in it doing awful, unspeakable things. King's strength is depicting it truthfully and going "okay, what now?" (1/2)

Okay, I think we're all tired of the "could a vampire cop/judge/landlord enter your home without an invite," so lets mix it up: What happens to a werewolf astronaut on the Moon? *Corollary, if an astronaut were on Mars, would Deimos and Phobos have the same effect? #horror #werewolves

Hot author *and* reader take: however you pronounce a character's name in your head is how it's pronounced. I've had people ask me how to pronounce certain names in my books, and I always say "however your brain did it, that's the right way." (1/2)

From a Reddit discussion about The Matrix: Resurrections. This is exactly why I kinda love the movie. Seems like Lana accomplished exactly what she meant to:
Big Discipline - It is not just one of the worst sequels, it's one of the worst movies in general.

(Next poster on thread)

PrimalNumber - I absolutely love that movie and its seething disdain for itself and the industry.

So a fun way to not feel old is to put all of your morning meds and supplements into a shot glass. I have two empty shot glasses on my desk right now and it looks noir as hell but it's mostly for anti-inflammatories, vitamins, and brain pills.

Things I want to write but haven’t yet: - Starship Exploration Sci-Fi (currently working on this!) - Vampire protagonist - Dense-ass obnoxiously world-built thousand-page 2nd world fantasy epic - Spider-Man - Sword fight (a good one)

It's with a heavy heart that I share that Luna passed. Gina and I adopted her at our 1st apartment, and she's been with us for 17 of her 18 years. Stubborn, smart, dopey, and always licking, she brought us so much joy. Thank you Luna Tuna, also know as The Fish, for being a part of our family.

One of the dumber things about me is that every 8 years I switch to Firefox and it works fine for about 7 months and then starts crashing non-stop. Then I uninstall it in a rage, and then I forget and do the same thing again in 8 years. Like, at some point, this is on me now. Fool me once, etc

Since we're asking for author notes to prove we're not AI, here's some snippets of my highly organized notes from my Google Keep for the 4th and 5th Deadgirl books:
"Some jokes involving the term Lucified, like they're riffing catch phrases and that's Daphne'a addition.

"Started making it. Had a breakdown. Bon apetit." James Acaster, Great British Bake OffDG5 Ideas. 2nd act idea: They're talking about saving REDACTED, rescuing her, etc. If she hasn't looked for us, maybe she's been caught, etc. They botch a rescue or something, and she makes it clear she's staying. Pop ppppppp

This was both harrowing and a ton of fun, a rare combination. It's the kind of unique, creative story that makes me want to rush to my computer to start writing. What a blast, full recommendation. Stellar cast, too.
Title card for "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die," with Sam Rockwell looking a little wild and covered in wires.

There's a bit in the Tao Te Ching about how the best leader of a government is one where "the people are hardly aware that he exists." Just, an interesting thought.

Anyone else still use Basic-Ass Notepad (the PC program) for taking notes, copying things, etc? I've always adored how clean and no frills it is. In a world of infinite distractions and AI chime-ins, Notepad feels like a meditative thought garden.

GRAVEDUST has more scenes set in Riverside county because I'd moved out there by the time I started writing the fourth and fifth books of the series. The windy, hilly road where a vampire character goes to feed was my commute for a year or so. I didn't eat any coyotes, though. Probably.

DAYBREAK has a huge party that changes the plot, and pretty much everything that happens at that party is drawn from about six different parties in my life. Except the supernatural stuff. Probably.

GONEWARD has one of the characters learning magic at around the time I was reading a ton about the practice of chaos magic. I even tried a few rituals myself and don't recommend it. It doesn't particularly work out for that character in GONEWARD, either.

GHOSTLIGHT has Lucy and friends join drama and do theatre because I did drama in school AND I worked in theatre on the tech side for around nine years after high school. Even the title is a reference to the "ghost light" in a theatre, the one light left on when the building is locked up.

Lucy's voice in the first DEADGIRL book (and subsequent books) is heavily based on my wife's high school diaries, which she graciously lent me when I first started writing the series. The car crash in the novel also occurs at the cross streets where my wife used to live in high school

These AI phishing emails to authors used to at least be semi-accurate. Now they don't even bother. I got one addressed to "Lenny" for my novel "A Medieval Misadventure," which is apparently a "high-stakes medieval fantasy story full of tropes with humor and absurdity."

Hey fellow #Buffy fans! I'm an indie author with a book series that's a big sloppy love letter to Buffy. High school supernatural nonsense, snarky leads, BA ladies, dudes doing their best, heart break, punching, etc Check it out if that sounds intriguing. It's all finished, so, no waiting:
The covers of the five Deadgirl novels by B.C. Johnson, and the Deadgirl novella "Daphne." Blue and magenta color scheme, a design mixing comic book-ish hero poses and spooky vibes.
