HELL yeah. Also somewhat of a baker over here -- my crowning achievement is a chevre cheesecake with a pine nut crust and zinfandel cherries, courtesy of the White Dog Cafe, in Philly. Needless to say, making sugary diabetes-causing treats is a Zen thing for me :)

Wow, "common sense" is doing ALL the work in that passage. Without more context, it'd seem like he's leaving himself very convenient loophole(s) as usual. Sorry, but he gave the game away a while back with his "somebody's gotta win, so it might as well be the Godly team" (paraphrased obvs) aside.

Resident Evil's a banger. It's Cregger's most *fun* one. Weapons is his best *movie*, but my hot take is that Barbarian is his best *horror movie*, if that makes sense.

Not giving a single solitary rolling fuck about cultural trends is goddamn amazing. After school I'd play Bach on a piano and my students (the more intelligent ones, anyway) would be intensely curious about it. I'd introduce those students to Tolkien, and they'd mainline it.

At the extreme risk of overstaying my welcome: My fav is actually Chinatown (I go for noir), and I think it works as a more realistic portrait of Bad Men: Gittes is an asshole, but comes to see his racism blinds him to the truth. Irony: directed by somebody who should be prosecuted.

(However, I disagree about Breaking Bad, mainly bc it was really compelling about its descent into hell. Culminating in a burnt, starved Walter rolling a barrel of money through the desert.)

Thanks for this, Danielle. Yes, I *really* love movies too, and Scorsese has problems with his not-entirely-even shock/glorification treatment of excess and misogyny. As I've gotten older I've definitely reevaluated. Another auteur in this category: Kubrick. (Yay for Moonlight, Dog!)

There's places on the earth, in the words of the late Spaulding Gray, where evil has touched down, and you feel it. I only felt it a couple times, when I was in the Cambodian countryside, and again when I toured the "Hanoi Hilton" prison. As a human being on this planet, you *must* show respect.

In the 1st season, there were a fair number of characters doing a lot of emotional growth, and that was interesting to watch,+ the legit hilarious moments. This season, not as much growth going on, with weird sitcom comedy scenes occasionally (thinking of the Fake Chicago Accent stuff).

But crucially he didn't use his $ to actively fund Jim Crow or its like in England. He might've known better; JKR actively chose evil. It's one thing to have reprehensible private views that may infect your work a la Roald Dahl; JKR makes them a public lifestyle choice.

You resurrecting your thread, me saying "hell yes". You want a wizard story that steals HP's lunch money in every way? LeGuin wrote an entire six books of Earthsea. I'm a Tolkien fan; yes, there's some racism in his books that can be interrogated bc *of the time he lived in*.

Nowhere is the formerly-argument-shaped blizzard more telling and more revealing than when the GOP talks about elections and "election fraud". Dude, just say you're an authoritarian and you don't believe in democracy anymore, rather than waste everyone's time bleating on about nonexistent fraud.

Gonna make you jealous. Couple towns away in Somerville, there's Red Bones. It's Somerville, which means $$, but they have white lightning in jars, brisket, Texas ribs, okra, the whole thing. It's not quite the BBQ I used to get at Brothers in Oakland, but that'll do. That'll do.
