ChatGPT is adding the signatures of real New Yorker cartoonists to its AI-generated images. So far, I've found the signatures of more than 15 contributors. "It’s slop, and unlike the other slop that I’ve encountered, this is slop that’s pretending to be me." www.niemanlab.org/2026/10/chat...
Left: A cartoon generated by ChatGPT and signed with Emily Flake’s signature that was posted to a Reddit forum in June. Right: A real Emily Flake cartoon published in The New Yorker on August 20, 2026 and licensed via The Cartoon Bank.

@karenho.bsky.social I also think that audiences tend to forget all of the background support systems that bring a project to completion. For example, if it's an article in a magazine, there may be a janitor at a building who also deserves to get paid a living wage.

Well said Karen. And brave. People love one part of Stewart Brand’s famous aphorism that “information wants to be free.” They tend to forget about the rest of his comment: “Information also wants to be expensive.”

Also if you come into my mentions and complain about a paywall, I will automatically mute or even block you. I worked for an art trade publication with no paywall, wrote my butt off there for a lot less money than if I covered stocks or banking, and was laid off. Every biz publication has a paywall.

Everything is getting more expensive, but if you want something to exist, you have to spend money, recommend it to others, and say a prayer if/when private equity buys it. Restaurants, indie ice cream shops, movies, news outlets, clothing, art, music, live comedy, food banks, mutual aid orgs, etc.

News and media companies finally putting in paywalls know 1) it means a smaller readership, 2) disinformation and misinformation is free, and 3) important stuff might not reach the right people. But the US gov also defunded the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. And billionaires are not the answer

I don't even know if I will be a reporter in a year. I love writing, talking to other people and figuring out how to put it all together, but advertising is not going to be enough to pay for a high-quality product, and if I start making video content, I risk stalkers and AI accounts ripping me off.

I understand that paywalls are annoying, but the grim reality for everything right now, is if you want something to exist, you have to put money towards it. Every creative person is having their life's work hoovered up by AI companies. Layoffs never end. Private equity keeps making things worse.

Readers of Tim Moore’s Travels with My Donkey will marvel at these donkeys placidly crossing a small bridge. Tho last donkey looks related to his Shinto.

Sure, that would give us Lascaux, say; accurate hi quality even tho on rough surface and in iffy lighting. Clearly the Pioneers weren’t painting for cat-loving folks, but still stumped why amid great art they can’t render one animal.

I give the artists a pass when drawing something they’ve never seen, like a croc or 🐘. But when there are samples of an item right in front of them, like a cat, why are they such bad copyists.

Adding another example to my collection of that’s-not-a-cat vase images. More like a cross between a chihuahua (that skull) and a kid in a monkey suit.

Its authenticity was discredited because of his reputation, but also because he was quick with gin at the time and wearing an item of knitwear back to front.

Early autumn yielded a particularly good windfall at the Sheep Tree this year.
Dozens of sheep gather at the foot of a wise old tree in Herefordshire, waiting for it to tell them stories.

Rise of copiers also freed wives from being unpaid typists of duplicate copies. No wife? Find yourself a female student and get her to do it. Even copying was laborious, tho, at first, hence need for editorial assistants.

Delightful also to hear real eagle noises. In movies eagles are always dubbed with hawks, since hawks found fierce and eagles sound like adorable squeakers.

So much attention spent on AI that folks have missed the issue of demonically possessed software. InDesign, looking at you. Number of 'help' sites that attest to brokenness of threading text boxes, sheesh. Not even gonna talk about footnotes, or what you do to fonts. Demons, all the way down.👹👹👹

Tom does 3 things to perfection: makes unexpected links, like jumping dogs and interstellar wormholes; creates characters of amazing complexity (human and other, like badgers and cats); and presents the nonrational as if utterly normal. No word is wasted; all belong on the page. Read all his books.

Genuinely flabbergasted to discover that the sign which inspired 'Stallions Bite', the 1986 debut album by my short-lived hair metal band Caution, is still intact, in the exact place where I originally found it.
A sign on a gate leading to a field, near East Prawle, in Devon, with 'CAUTION STALLIONS BITE' written on it.
