we ended up wondering if those anti-live-burial devices from victorian times (bell on a wire, etc) ever actually saved anyone. looked it up and the answer is a very unexciting no

there can only be one. let the garrisons fight
Walleye is a culturally significant food in the Upper Midwest.[26] Walleye is popular in Minnesota; the Minnesota Legislature declared walleye the official state fish in 1965. Three towns—Garrison, Minnesota; Baudette, Minnesota; and Garrison, North Dakota—each claim to be the "Walleye Capital of the World" and a large statue of the fish is erected in each town.

so i was like "what does this bra say about people who are NOT madonna when they wear it?? what am i supposed to think about like, bart's weird aunt wearing the madonna bra????" it didn't occur to me that something this wacky looking was ever considered normal or housewifey
090
batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
being informed that this was normal in the 50s and... ??? i can now see the vision of madonna making the chaste and/or frumpy into a performance art piece but i simply would not have like. ever connected it without help. i fully thought madonna wore it as an objet d'art that never previously existed

batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
i have a stupid question. in the simpsons/life in hell what is the reference that is being made when they draw this crazy titty bra thing. is it... madonna... ?? or was it some other cultural touchstone from the time. it looks so specific. what is the meaning of the crazy titty bra
selma (or patty but i think it's selma) in the crazy titty bra

it's not that i think the author gets to control his work's adaptations in perpetuity so much as i think he's right. any depiction that places our gaze in community with humbert's loses the text's delicate position of being immersed in HH's head while simultaneously separate from and critical of him
020
batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
i really need to read pale fire but instead i'm here re-re-rereading lol. i think i will never see any of the movies after coming across at some point nabokov's express wishes to never have a girl depicted on the book's cover. any movie seems to violate that wish many time over
I want pure colors, melting clouds, accurately drawn details, a sunburst above a receding road with the light reflected in furrows and ruts, after rain. And no girls. … Who would be capable of creating a romantic, delicately drawn, non-Freudian and non-juvenile, picture for LOLITA (a dissolving remoteness, a soft American landscape, a nostalgic highway—that sort of thing)? There is one subject which I am emphatically opposed to: any kind of representation of a little girl.
230
batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
yeah it's one of the most densely layered texts i've ever read in my life—i'd never reduce its meaning to a single-sentence summary. i think a lot about quantum states while reading it, all the simultaneous realities it may or may not contain, and i extend that quality to analysis of the book itself
130
batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
BUT as stated i do accept most of the "reality" around lolita herself/her circumstances. to me the novel is interesting BECAUSE it places this utterly unconvincing romantic gauze over a horror story. so if he killed charlotte, he did it in a way that, presumably, others saw as an accident, somehow
130
batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
charlotte's death i feel less strongly about than quilty tbf. it's an interesting combination of unreliable narrotor who gets his DREAM OUTCOME after fantasizing about killing her just pages earlier + the whole book is a monster's attempt to appear civilized and righteous whilst admitting his crimes
230
batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
anyway none of it really matters because like most other media i enjoy, literal events and "what really happened" are the most distant, unimportant concerns behind metaphor, imagery, implication, the art of the storytelling, etc
060
batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
but especially as qulity's part in the novel mounts and HH's slipping sanity and overactive pattern-recognition drive invents more and more implausible webs of conspiracy, i just don't see a good reason in my reading (so far) to assume he's real enough to call a character outside of HH's head
240
batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
like do we also not all agree that HH killed charlotte... do we think that just conveniently also "really" happened in the "reality" of the text... to my mind anything at all in the book could be real or imagined. there could have never been a lolita (though in my reading i do "believe in her")
240
batty @batty.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
rereading lolita and feeling insane because, while i don't usually outsource my analysis, i got curious and googling around it feels like im in the minority for assuming quilty simply doesn't exist, or was a name HH projected his own guilt or "shadow self" onto?? im not pretending that guy was real

i still think about rachel bighead from the rocko's special sometimes. i don't know if this is a weird take but i think it was really sweet of joe murray to offer up his "self insert" character this way to an identity he (presumably) doesn't share himself. like offering the closest thing to himself

anyway this happened to peter i mean dr lorre for 30 years i think
In the most famous (and only documented) case, which had occurred a mere thirty years ago, a Jaunt
researcher named Lester Michaelson had tied up his wife with their daughter's plexiplast Dreamropes
and pushed her, screaming, through the Jaunt portal at Silver City, Nevada. But before doing it,
Michaelson had pushed the Nil button on his Jaunt board, erasing each and every one of the hundreds
of thousands of possible portals through which Mrs. Michaelson might have emerged - anywhere from
neighboring Reno to the experimental Jaunt-Station on Io, one of the Jovian moons. So there was
Mrs. Michaelson, Jaunting forever somewhere out there in the ozone. Michaelson's lawyer, after
Michaelson had been held sane and able to stand trial for what he had done (within the narrow limits

of the law, perhaps he was sane, but in any practical sense, Lester Michaelson was just as mad as a
hatter), had ciphered a novel defense: his client could not be tried for murder because no one could
prove conclusively that Mrs. Michaelson was dead. This had raised the terrible specter of the woman,
discorporeal but somehow still sentient, screaming in limbo . . . forever.

course the candle imagery could also extend to the manner of chuck's death which would be another big contender. unrelated to that but it's interesting how walt derides the time machine question out of hand when he had an answer that could have worked back in breaking bad (in the fly ep no less lol)
180
batty @batty.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
starting hg wells the time machine since it's such a classic and because they make a lot of overt allusions to it in better call saul and already perking my ears up at this imagery. the candle was so prominent to that final howard scene, maybe that's the moment saul would have gone back to really
Then, when we had all imitated the action of the Medical Man, he said: “Now I want you clearly to understand that this lever, being pressed over, sends the machine gliding into the future, and this other reverses the motion. This saddle represents the seat of a time traveller. Presently I am going to press the lever, and off the machine will go. It will vanish, pass into future Time, and disappear. Have a good look at the thing. Look at the table too, and satisfy yourselves there is no trickery. I don’t want to waste this model, and then be told I’m a quack.”

There was a minute’s pause perhaps. The Psychologist seemed about to speak to me, but changed his mind. Then the Time Traveller put forth his finger towards the lever. “No,” he said suddenly. “Lend me your hand.” And turning to the Psychologist, he took that individual’s hand in his own and told him to put out his forefinger. So that it was the Psychologist himself who sent forth the model Time Machine on its interminable voyage. We all saw the lever turn. I am absolutely certain there was no trickery. There was a breath of wind, and the lamp flame jumped. One of the candles on the mantel was blown out, and the little machine suddenly swung round, became indistinct, was seen as a ghost for a second perhaps, as an eddy of faintly glittering brass and ivory; and it was gone—vanished! Save for the lamp the table was bare.

Everyone was silent for a minute. Then Filby said he was damned.

The Psychologist recovered from his stupor, and suddenly looked under the table. At that the Time Traveller laughed cheerfully. “Well?” he said, with a reminiscence of the Psychologist. Then, getting up, he went to the tobacco jar on the mantel, and with his back to us began to fill his pipe.

We stared at each other.

i get impatient, just seems like a waste of an entire spectrum of meaningful human experience when it's so often processed as intended to titillate or shock (which it sometimes is, sure). let's evolve already and get past the starting block, sex can represent anything and anything can represent sex
0250
batty @batty.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
i mean we can definitely talk about angry parents trying to ban books and music, especially certain genres, for acknowledging sex, but for my money that's kind of a different beast than the actual audience of the art saying "i liked it except for the needless sexual themes"
1230
batty @batty.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
i feel like books/literature and music are some of the only art media where sex/sex scenes/sexual themes are gamely absorbed by nearly the entire audience as an inherently valuable part of the art and not a gratuitous add-on. maybe visual media is too much for people to handle or something

and that made me go like oh duh, sarah's whole situation of applying to art schools, putting herself out there, being rejected over and over isn't just reflecting her crush on bear, it's also a foil to how bear won't take a chance on being rejected himself. really simple but took me awhile!!

batty @batty.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
was just talking to a friend about how imo the ambiguity of real nikki's feelings toward bear is the point, bear not knowing and being too scared to find out is the whole reason he'd rather make a wish that either does nothing or does everything. no risk involved, just no change or a sure thing

still obsessionposting sorry can't stop. i really like how basically all the symbols/themes/implications are pretty simple and easy to grasp once you look at them, but the move doesn't hand them to you. like nikki standing in the shadow of a dark room. obviously there once you see it. it's neato

if the snakes were meant to be a phallic object in line with the general theme then the character running after them yelling I GOTTA SAVE MY SNAKES is a really fucking funny blunt object of a line but we are talking about a film whose protagonist is literally named Mann so

duel was also a totally crazy movie. emasculation themes aside it’s kinda nuts how rarely a movie truly capitalizes on how terrifying a motor vehicle as a weapon can truly be, considering the daily latent threat for almost everyone. you’d think he’d run out of ways to keep making it scary but nah
2130
batty @batty.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
obviously real nikki is the most obvious and tragic victim in the story but i don’t see the entity as some demon delighting in its evil deeds, it was created to endure a short life of extreme pain even though it was also forced to oppress nikki
1130
batty @batty.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
dunno if it’s strange to say the “wish nikki” entity in obsession was also a tragic victim character and imo relatably so. cursed to be obsessed with fulfilling a purpose you’re not even very good at, and everyone can tell you’re failing at what you really want to succeed in. in pain because of it

personally i hope if faust gets a g6 show—whether it's one of two (the other skewing younger/softer) or the singular main event—that she gets to play in a new universe or time period from g4. i want to see some new ideas and new ponies from her as much as i like the original 6.
1160
batty @batty.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
could be wrong on all counts. but she didn't make the rounds for g5 so why would she for g6 if she had no stake in it. additionally, having left after s2 of g4 i have to imagine hasbro was the one to ask her back, not vice versa. if she's making something she's probably granted some creative pull
