there can only be one. let the garrisons fight

Walleye is a culturally significant food in the Upper Midwest.[26] Walleye is popular in Minnesota; the Minnesota Legislature declared walleye the official state fish in 1965. Three towns—Garrison, Minnesota; Baudette, Minnesota; and Garrison, North Dakota—each claim to be the "Walleye Capital of the World" and a large statue of the fish is erected in each town.

i really need to read pale fire but instead i'm here re-re-rereading lol. i think i will never see any of the movies after coming across at some point nabokov's express wishes to never have a girl depicted on the book's cover. any movie seems to violate that wish many time over

I want pure colors, melting clouds, accurately drawn details, a sunburst above a receding road with the light reflected in furrows and ruts, after rain. And no girls. … Who would be capable of creating a romantic, delicately drawn, non-Freudian and non-juvenile, picture for LOLITA (a dissolving remoteness, a soft American landscape, a nostalgic highway—that sort of thing)? There is one subject which I am emphatically opposed to: any kind of representation of a little girl.

In the most famous (and only documented) case, which had occurred a mere thirty years ago, a Jaunt
researcher named Lester Michaelson had tied up his wife with their daughter's plexiplast Dreamropes
and pushed her, screaming, through the Jaunt portal at Silver City, Nevada. But before doing it,
Michaelson had pushed the Nil button on his Jaunt board, erasing each and every one of the hundreds
of thousands of possible portals through which Mrs. Michaelson might have emerged - anywhere from
neighboring Reno to the experimental Jaunt-Station on Io, one of the Jovian moons. So there was
Mrs. Michaelson, Jaunting forever somewhere out there in the ozone. Michaelson's lawyer, after
Michaelson had been held sane and able to stand trial for what he had done (within the narrow limits

of the law, perhaps he was sane, but in any practical sense, Lester Michaelson was just as mad as a
hatter), had ciphered a novel defense: his client could not be tried for murder because no one could
prove conclusively that Mrs. Michaelson was dead. This had raised the terrible specter of the woman,
discorporeal but somehow still sentient, screaming in limbo . . . forever.

starting hg wells the time machine since it's such a classic and because they make a lot of overt allusions to it in better call saul and already perking my ears up at this imagery. the candle was so prominent to that final howard scene, maybe that's the moment saul would have gone back to really

Then, when we had all imitated the action of the Medical Man, he said: “Now I want you clearly to understand that this lever, being pressed over, sends the machine gliding into the future, and this other reverses the motion. This saddle represents the seat of a time traveller. Presently I am going to press the lever, and off the machine will go. It will vanish, pass into future Time, and disappear. Have a good look at the thing. Look at the table too, and satisfy yourselves there is no trickery. I don’t want to waste this model, and then be told I’m a quack.”

There was a minute’s pause perhaps. The Psychologist seemed about to speak to me, but changed his mind. Then the Time Traveller put forth his finger towards the lever. “No,” he said suddenly. “Lend me your hand.” And turning to the Psychologist, he took that individual’s hand in his own and told him to put out his forefinger. So that it was the Psychologist himself who sent forth the model Time Machine on its interminable voyage. We all saw the lever turn. I am absolutely certain there was no trickery. There was a breath of wind, and the lamp flame jumped. One of the candles on the mantel was blown out, and the little machine suddenly swung round, became indistinct, was seen as a ghost for a second perhaps, as an eddy of faintly glittering brass and ivory; and it was gone—vanished! Save for the lamp the table was bare.

Everyone was silent for a minute. Then Filby said he was damned.

The Psychologist recovered from his stupor, and suddenly looked under the table. At that the Time Traveller laughed cheerfully. “Well?” he said, with a reminiscence of the Psychologist. Then, getting up, he went to the tobacco jar on the mantel, and with his back to us began to fill his pipe.

We stared at each other.

i knew this story before but i didn't realize the benefactor was hot

Tchaikovsky’s fortunes changed in 1877 when he gained the emotional and financial support of wealthy patron Nadezhda Von Meck. The generous annual stipend of 6000 roubles she gave him – about 20x what he would have made as a civil servant – enabled him to quit his job with the Conservatory and become Russia’s first full-time, professional composer.

While the composer and his patron exchanged more than 1,200 deeply personal letters in the course of 13 years (that’s nearly two a week), they met only once—accidentally and awkwardly—and they never spoke a word to each other. Von Meck stipulated that she never wanted to meet as a condition of her patronage, and the socially awkward Tchaikovsky was more than happy to comply.

You are afraid that you will not find in me those ideal qualities that your imagination has attributed to me. And you are quite right.”—Tchaikovsky, in a letter to Von Meck.

btw half-joking but they totally gentrified the lo-fi girl. in WotH it's a major implied point of the story that she's in a lower class compared to a lot of her classmates and lives in a tiny cramped apartment. lofi girl lives in some kind of pinterest cozycore high rise

always find it funny when people say you can tell what an artist is really interested in by what they render the most or whatever. idk im not INTERESTED in drapery (or trees or glass or water or whatever) i just have an inexplicable demon inside of me that forces me to do this

drapery rendered like that for no good reason
