Mint with xfce is a great fit for old laptops. Vanilla Ubuntu can be a bit too bloated, but they still need the weird drivers for wifi and power mgmt that only Ubuntu and offshoots seem to have. It's the only distro I've gotten to work right on my old 2013 macbook.
