Current state of the Desk Conqueror.
Alfred the Toothy at the left hand of deskness. He's asleep, cat mouth open, dreaming of unreachable dignity.

Keep it together, Montgomery. It's just a wee kitty. It's just a wee ki—
More of Alfred the Black Matter discovering that me changing my desk around means expanded arenas for attention-seeking. Here he's on the laptop, with my Strange New Worlds Scotty background looking concerned on the screen behind him.Alfred yawns, and it's terrifying. Because of the dim light, he's all teeth and tongue. The version here is compressed, but the original is properly alien bone and distortion in high definition. Scotty was rightly concerned.

Three disposable fountain pens, all alike in dignity, in fair condition, where we lay our coffee... (There's a difference in the ink windows. But come on. If you're just refilling your PaperSkater Galaxy, hie thee to Daiso.)
Three pens from different brands artfully arranged on my Rhodia notebook. They're the same pen.

Silver Itoya Blade w/black ink $3.99 (Goldspot Pens)
Red Daiso pen w/red ink $2.25 (Daiso)
Blue Nakabayashi Artnavi w/blue ink $3.00 (JetPens)

The Itoya PaperSkater shell will also hold Pilot Varsity pens if you use the spacer, and Zebra disposables if you squish them in there.

In black-and-white, Gary Leach has drawn for us the famous comics character of your youth and mine and that of generations yet unborn, Marvelman...he's back.

Marvelman's just swooped joyously between the Earth and the Moon and in this picture would technically kind of be punching down at an angle if you consider gravity. I mean, seeing him from Earth's perspective, this is an athlete in body paint and cuffed boots diving ecstatically *toward* the planet, like an apocalyptic asteroid with seriously cool branding. Which might be one of the comic's themes. Who can tell at this point?

After Marvelman shouts his name and states that he's returned with two exclamation points (in the vacuum of space), a caption informs us that this is "THE BEGINNING..." and also that "THIS STORY IS RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED TO MICK ANGLO AND THE ORIGINAL MARVELMAN TEAM."

Alan Moore wrote at least some of those words, just in case he's taken his name off this project, too. I can't keep track.

"Callum's Alan Moore Anecdote" by Eddie Campbell.

Drawn with lines and ink, the Great Grumbleduke (Moore) stands tall with his serpent-headed scepter tucked in his folded arms. Before him is a dark-haired boy with a big coat that he's got his hands in the pockets of. They are in the Great White Void of the Land of Fiction.

We dare not speculate further.

Oh, shit. Gull wings and Bob Ross!
Yes, it's a DeLorean on my street. And the guy melted into the chair next to it has big hair.

You can see the Army jeep better this time, too. (The Wildcat car has moved on for some reason.) From the giant photo stuck in the back, I'd say this one is haunted.

Car show happening off the front porch today.
The terra cotta cat is blocking the El Camino, but there's a red number with flames and a "Wildcat" that's teal? Aquamarine?

It's a whole block of aged motor vehicles; that's just what I can see without venturing into actual sun. It's already 91° out there.Looking the other way, but still avoiding solar destruction, you can barely see one of the ancient jeeps on the other side of the street.

Over here we've got a curvy yellow number with a back tattoo lifting her hood to flash the passersby. Next to that's a fellow I quite fancy, like a dark grey squat '30s Batmobile.

(The U-Haul you see is technically in the parking lot over the way, and not part of the classic "car" shew.)

2008 color digital photo of an Animal Man action figure on a desk. (On my desk. You can tell because we used to have a terrible shot glass problem.) Strong sidelight and an artificial grain effect make it all dramatic and whatnot.

A jape or jest generated by the montage (or "mashing-up") of two or more previously unassociated signifiers.

Here we have a black-and-white illustration of a costumed Christian Bale walking with the actors from a Law & Order series. The caption beneath reads:

"In the Criminal Justice System of Gotham City the people are represented by three separate, yet equally important groups. The police who investigate crime, the District Attorneys who prosecute the offenders, and the Goddamn Batman.
These are their stories."

Bizarro say Goodbye to October!

In this black-and-white piece, Bizarro is in the foreground, stumbering and lumbling toward us with a real Patchwork Man look on his mug. He's just cratered a bit of Metropolis street and am feeling groovy.

Behind him, the unusual gang of agley reacts. Lois Lane pulls out her micro-recorder. The cops pull out their guns. Superman pulls out concern. Jimmy Olsen pulls out a film camera with the wrong fussing lens for the shot, Jimmy. God!

Untamed sources tell me this was a commission piece. Chris Weston throwing all that ink at folds and shadows and faces that speak with no sound for pennies? Likely!

https://pulphope.blogspot.com/2008/02/pin-ups3.html

A flushed pink-rose star-spangled burlesque montage, I suppose you could say. Fish nets and smoke rings and coral arches and angel wings. Feminine figure eights punctuated with emphatic tassels.

What probably drew my attention was the watching face below: dark-haired cigarette-smoking woman, the Nick Fury of lust.

4-panel black-and-white strip written and drawn by Seanan McGuire. She also wrote a song about the same project. I don't know.

PANEL ONE - Two people, looking thinner than they did in real life, wearing glasses, posing for the camera. He's got a goatee and a raised eyebrow. She's got a grin and her hand on her hip.

CAPTION: Meet Mark and Anna.

CAPTION: As Illusive Arts, they publish 'DOROTHY'.

PANEL TWO - Sketch version of modern Dorothy Gale, with her boots and backpack, looking cross. Then a cartoon plus sign. Then a dark scribbly tornado. Then a cartoon equals sign. Then sketch versions of happy swirly-tailed monkeys with bat wings.

TEXT: 'Dorothy' combines teen angst
TEXT: With bad weather
TEXT: And we get...
TEXT: Flying monkeys!
TEXT: ...okay, not really.

PANEL THREE - Close-up of modern Dorothy Gale in a dark wood with a long road twisting afterbefore her. She wears her silver star necklace, and an Ozma armband that was never in the comic.

TEXT: It's really a very serious story about a very scary Oz.

PANEL FOUR - Return to the couple from Panel One. The man now has a kerchief tied over his mouth. The woman leans forward and bares her teeth in a giant smile.

CAPTION: Mark would tell you more, but Anna's breasts sell more comics.

CAPTION: Look! Boobies! (We'll untie him later.)

***
Listen: still I am tied to the mast. Still they call, each to each. Remember me. But if remembered a burden be, forget me.

I dig a Silver Surfer that's a Mirror Surfer. I'm easy that way.

Cosmic winds, scale, implausible starlight —> that all helps. And apparently the character has a backstory of massive survivor's guilt or is occasionally Doctor Who or something, which is cool. Y'know. Look, so long as they're mercury singing in space, I don't care if they occasionally get ridden by Zorro while shouting kowabunga.

Clayton Crain is the artist for the original cover of Silver Surfer #10, of which this is a tiny version shrunk down for phone wallpaper.

Now this, this you would be proud to have on your everyday personal communications device.

It's Wolverine! Drawn by John Cassaday! In the Great White Void of the Land of Fiction from Doctor Who! He's worried that you might Drag To Unlock!

I wasn't happy when Grant Morrison left X-Men (the only time I cared about the X-Men), but it was nice to see John Cassaday get some work on the old merry mutant band afterward. Then he turns in a walloping great cover like this on issue #17 and I'm all, "Aww, I wish I liked your writers. I would buy this, instead of downloading a .jpg at 320x480 a year from now."

Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT-SPOUT
“Close to our bows, strange forms in the water darted hither and thither before us; while thick in our rear flew the inscrutable sea-ravens. And every morning, perched on our stays, rows of these birds were seen; and spite of our hootings, for a long time obstinately clung to the hemp, as though they deemed our ship some drifting, uninhabited craft; a thing appointed to desolation, and therefore fit roosting-place for their homeless selves. And heaved and heaved, still unrestingly heaved the black sea, as if its vast tides were a conscience; and the great mundane soul were in anguish and remorse for the long sin and suffering it had bred.”

Nah, it's Batman, really.

Dark Knight Absolute Edition cover rendered down to iPhone wallpaper size, or something similar, should this filename be anything to go by. I think this might have been when Frank was in his "I don't even pencil anymore, I just hew the page with brush and ink" phase. Spout black blood and roll fin out, so to speak.

HE'S RIGHT BEHIND YOU!

It's December, 1944. I bet they're sleeping in New York. I bet they're sleeping all over America, visions of sugar plums dropping on their heads. So up to the roof comes Wonder Woman, alias Miss Santa Claus, with her fur-trimmed breastplate and boots and collared cape and short-shorts. She's got a sack full of warplanes and puzzle boxes to delight you. This is an All-American Publication. Salute if you're merry.

For the same thin dime, the cover of Sensation Comics #38 also offers a sockless yegg lurking with a tommy gun in the snow. Of all the rooftops in all the world...

Do you think it's a cry for help?
Upper ink shelf with archive edition graphic novels next to ink bottles which is madness, now that I think about it. I think it's mainly blues up here.Middle shelf which is supposed to be just pen cases and some figurines, but has got more than half a dozen ink bottles stacked up as well. The Diamine Lady Grey just arrived the other day.The lower ink drawer, which... is a lot. A wiser person would get a label maker. The Diamine Oxblood came with a sticker on top, so that's good.

I know enough about the Simpsons to know "This is from the Simpsons."

The young man in glasses is named Milhouse and looks like a tiny blue-haired Eugene Levy. Research tells me that the rectangle he's holding up is a DVD, not a graphic novel. On the cover is the title, WATCHMEN BABIES -IN- V FOR VACATION. Illustrated below are Groening versions of Ozymandias, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, and Nite-Owl surfing like turtles. The boy seems happy.

Listen: Thursdays can get quite busy. The girl with the Lisa tattoo was barely a factor.Another comics-related gag in The Simpsons, presumably from the same episode.

Look, I saw the movie in the theater. It had something to do with donuts.

In this scene, a Groening version of Alan Moore (you can tell by the rings) is shocked/concerned/delighted by what he reads in the blank pages of a "Little Lulu" comic. I'm guessing the painting behind him is subtle nod to "Lost Girls".

320x480 pixels might not sound like much now, but in 2007 you could pull an iPhone from your pocket with this adulterated cover of Incredible Hulk #60 by Mike Deodato Jr & Hermes Tadeu on the lock screen and people would dive under tables shouting, "There's a monster clawing its way out of that calculator!"

I'm not sure why the person who made this wallpaper thought it would be best to have the Hulk ripping through some green gradients and mismatched halves of his own face rather than the original concrete wall. Without the illusion of pushing against solid objects, there seem to be rather too many fingers and no sense at all to the edges or the shadows. Then again, depression is anger turned inwards.

The relationship between the image and the lettering is poor, but I think the notion is that Robin tries to tell Batman what he'd like to read, but his plea is cut off with a forehand cuff to the ear and the insistence that the only thing to be read around here is "Moby-Dick", the book.

It's late October in 2007. Not only do I have an iPhone, I have an urge to let the world know that's not all I'm about. I stick 320x480 pixels of King Nerd Robot visiting a ski resort on my lock screen. They'll never understand me.

Ha! Ha! It is to be joking. Iron Man is not a robot. He is a Bad-Decision Dalek.Iron Man (song) > Iron Man III > Iron Man (comics) > Iron Man (Avengers movies)

This iPhone wallpaper is none of those. It's from at least six months before the first Marvel film came out. Was there a video game by then? Maybe it was for hype and promotion: "Let's show people Iron Man can be in a real movie by posing the armor on a James Bond location. No, not a beach. Think Dalton or Moore." "Is that a picture of Luke floating in the Bacta tank on your phone?"

GOD, mom. His face isn't even pointing down!

Tony Stark would have to be Doug Jones to fit into this sort of armor, honestly. And have hollow bird-bones to fly like this over a desert, even under rocket power. Imagine that sort of goggle-eyed stick figure propped up at the end of a conference table. Imagine Smeagol elongated, delivering a TED Talk. It came true. You're looking at it.

This is *exactly* the sort of thing we did in the LARP. Christ. Witness this fragment of AOKPness dated September 26, 1995:
“Stardate 12.16.10.35
We have been conducting spectroanalytic scans of the Cumbrian sector for some time now. Hopefully my science officer will be able to use the information we gather here in some novel way, saving the day in nick of time. We will then follow standard procedure and immediately purge the computer of the data, preventing anyone from capitalizing on his discovery.”
I pushed the send button on the command chair with a smile. All around me the deck bustled with the activities that were the hallmark of a well-run starship. Something was missing, though. Something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
“Captain, we are being hailed,” came a voice from behind me.
“Thank you, Lieutenant Ia Gondol. Do we know who it is?”
“No sir. There are no ships within scanner range.”
“Hurm. Alright, put me on the big screen. And shoot from below, I look more impressive that way.”
I spun in my chair to face the Viewscreen and deepened my voice an octave.
“Unknown Vessel: This is Captain James T. Zandofar of the Pendragon Starship Warwick. Identify yourselves.” That’d show ‘em.

BRIAN'S DECISION
https://www.progressiveruin.com/2007/10/21/brians-decision/

In the final panel of this gripping morality play, the Editor cuts in after the Narrator and bids you "WRITE IN THE ANSWER _YOU_ THINK BRIAN SHOULD GIVE..."

Brian, the bookish boy with the splayed hand, has an empty word balloon above his red head. It's like a Choose Your Own Adventure, only without consequences.

Aside from being a dig at the Mod Squad, this panel also served as a template for comics blogger fun in October 2007. You didn't even have to use the Eraser Tool!I stole my response to "Brian's Decision" entirely from BLACKADDER GOES FORTH, episode 5, "General Hospital".

When offered just one cigarette to try, my Brian responds, "Sorry chaps, I only smoke after sex. Better give me the whole pack." The only redeeming feature is that I used a nice lettering font and the bold on "sex" looks authentic.

The superior Elton and Curtis (et al.) version goes:

Nurse Mary: Good, because, er, it can get pretty lonely round here, you know. God, it’s nice to have someone healthy to talk to. (offers) Cigarette?

Captain Blackadder: No, thank you. I only smoke cigarettes after making love. So, back in England, I’m a twenty-a-day man.

BATMAN in WALLPAPER!

This is Adam Kubert's cover for Batman #655, here reduced to 320x480 for 2007 phone screen purposes. What's rendered is not so much a scene from any story, but more a collage of Batman elements that almost make sense. A notebook poem murmuring, "cool, cool." I mean, there's an orange sky in the background, so the red bats are flying *in* to any cave that's suggested by the black stalactites and stalagmites. So it's gotta be sunrise. Which, maybe? Batman's got weight-lifter thighs and swimmer abs but all the grace of a thrown toad as he leaps from nothing down to nowhere, arms raked back to break no fall. The cape is in its own weather system that neither the bats nor the mists can feel. Some wanker has signed one of the rocks. Still, it works. Like a dream you once had.

Not for nothing, this covers the first issue of Grant Morrison's grand Batman working. Building a Better Batmobile. Damian Wayne. Zur-En-Arrh. Apophenia. We were the best. No matter what anyone thinks.

3-D-enhanced image of the Chicxulub asteroid that struck Comics, America, causing worldwide commercial disruption and the extinction of the human heart. Although not apparent here, artists believe it was mainly composed of Doctor Who reference photos and advanced mathematicians.

Hold up. Volumetric is the word I'm looking for. It's a volumetric rendering of the "blood drop and eye" close-up that serves as the cover and introduction to WATCHMEN, this time sized and shaped for the lock screen of your original iPhone.Dave Gibbons Man sitting on Dave Gibbons Rocks against a Dave Gibbons Starfield. You can tell because of the lines and circles his nib made.

Dr. Manhattan is supposed to be holding a photograph, but in this particular 320x480 crop, Jon's got a little blue rectangle over his privates. Gonna tell kids this was part of the launch video for the iPhone Duo.

What's really going to bake your noodle is realizing JUPITER ASCENDING is a remake of "Delta and the Bannermen."
No one can tell you what the Matrix is, except that it's trillions of electrochemical cells in a continuous matrix. The cells are the repository of departed Time Lords. At the moment of death, an electrical scan is made of the brain pattern and these millions of impulses are immediately transferred to the APC control.
