finally finished my Megamastax painting! started this one after the new material was described and let it simmer for a while

in shallow water, a Megamastax charges through a large school of smaller fish with its mouth open. the smaller fish dart away forming a circular gap which the larger predatory fish swims within, continuing to charge in the hope of a meal

Megamastax is an ancient genus of bony fish from Silurian China, for a while it was only known from a lower jaw bone, but more recent material puts it at an estimate of around 1 metre long. one curious feature are the presence of compound tooth plates on its upper and lower jaws composed of many small backwards facing teeth, with a row of smaller singular teeth around the margin of the mouth

Last art of the year! #SciArt As a fun pastime on my Christmas break, I looked into basal ceratopsians a bit and doodled them. Turns out they vary from cuddly little guys to beasts that would have made a mighty (and very bitey) steed. Close-ups of each one in thread 🧵:

Some new #paleoart to see out 2025: a Hybodus shark attacks a squadron of belemnites (Passaloteuthis), which respond by deploying ink decoys of themselves and jetting to safety. Cephalopod ink use is amazingly sophisticated; it's not just a smokescreen! #HappyNewYear, everybody! #sciart #fossil

A brownish Hydobus shark careers into a group of brightly-coloured belemnites, squid-like cephalopods equipped with fins, 10 arms and (in some individuals) enormous hooks. The belemnites have ejected vast quantities of ink around the shark to confuse its attack, mixing mucus with their propelled pigments to make replicas of themselves. Whether they're engaging in radio chatter like old-timey fighter pilots evading the path of a large bomber while flying through chaff is not clear.

the double-crested theropod dilophosaurus rests by a stream in the shade of a tree, with some slender sauropodomorphs and pterosaurs in the background, which shows a forest and a canyon. her plumage is mostly black to dark grey, with a slightly lighter underbelly, flecked throughout with lilac-white highlights. there is a ring of blue skin around her eye, and her crest is sulphur-yellow with black vertical stripes.
