The Dutch Province of North-Holland should be lauded for giving information on archeology for free on this excellent website, made possible through the Huis of Hilde #Museum.: www.huisvanhilde.nl/depot-en-ond... Also: archeologiewestfriesland.nl www.awn-archeologie.nl/afdeling/zaa...
From the outside farm houses look a bit the same: a large dwelling for people and cattle in it and with a thatched roof. But that's not true of cousrse.

This is a 5th Century Farm House, form the publication "North-Holland in the First Millenium". It has a side door on the long side and a door on the short side.

I hope to finish my model in 1/56 this year for my wargaming project on the Holland-West-Frisian wars. These looked a lot on the outside like this one, but the construction was different.

Now this is interesting, as the history of the French Militia and National Guard has parallels to the Batavian Republic National Guard.

It was book ordering week. This ebook (printed version no longer available) looks nice, too bad it ends at the year 1797.

Nearly done with my troops for the early Frisian-Holland war. Just some highlights and grass before varnishing the lot. Usable for 950 to 1150 and maybe later as well. Mini’s from Victrix and Wargames Atlantic and some horses by Foundry. #wargaming #Frisian #nerdlings
Mainly peasants and free-men in 25mm. Armed with spears and other pointy things and bows. Painted with Vallejo acryl (terrible) and Van Gogh oils. (Excellent)A commander, I made up the flag, and as the Low Countries were Christian now, a cross themed banner would be ok.

I bought the Victrix dark age set, you can make 12 knights if you want to, just buy some extra horses.
Detailed commandTroops in chainmail (Hollanders) and other warriors.

Lekker boekjes lezen!
Leuk boek over politieke moorden in de middeleeuwen.

Great book on political murder and other killings in medieval times. Plus a lot of info on skirmishes and battles in the Low Countries from 950 to 1450.

Yes, there were a lot of them making this period quite unpleasant sometimes, avoiding disease, plagues and the odd flood as well.

For the #wargamers amongst us: #wrg and #dba lists could do with an update on the Low Countries. Found this on a flee market. Quite a steal for 2 euros!A classic! #Clausewitz

This weeks #wargaming #hobbying Finishing my West-Frisians (1000 AD), and starting with the French Revolutionary Armies. Plus some troubles with my H&S Evo airbrush.
Working on the second batch of the Hollanders/West-Frisians. I already finished the cavalry. I am struggeling with all the Vallejo green paints, they mix terrible, and dry gloss. Could be the primer as well, which I will test tomorrow. Figures by Victrix and Wargames Atlantic.

In total about 100 mini’s I painted :-)Perry Miniatures French, primed white using Vallejo white primer. Terrible paint, but it could be my airbrush as well. I ordered a bag of mini’s from the UK as well but they didn’t evade customs. Perry’s p&p was already quite expensive and tjis isn’t a great incentive to order from the UK again..French carabiniers and chasseurs to fill the ranks. We will use Drums and Shakos Large battles to game with them.
My trusty Harder & Steenbeck Evo airbrush. Can take a lot of beating, cleaning and crap paints.

It started painting off centre with the .4mm and a new needle wasn’t the solution. It works kinda.. but replacing needle, nozzle and cap is a bit too much. The 0.2 mm works ok.

This is the regulation flag, unfortunately no example like this has survived.
Burocracy! Of course the flag had to be regulated in one of the many Batavian Republic Regulations.

An Amsterdam flaf based on the 1797 model #flag of the #Batavian Republic National Guard.
From the collection of the #Rijksmuseum, one of the few surviving colours of the Batavian National Guard. Amsterdam had a well organised Guard, and they fought with distinction in 1799 against the Anglo-Russian invaders.

Joost Roosendaal wrote a great book on the Anglo-Russian invasion of 1799. The Arnhem National Guard fought off a mercenary Army that invaded the East of the Batavian Republic and got rewarded with a special coin. #Bataafse #Republiek #Gewapendeburgermacht
The Arnhem Batavian National Guard firing at the Orangist rebels.
It took me years to find the coin, it was mentioned in literature, but here it is: the special minted coin for the #Arnhem National Guard.

The inscription says “loyal to the Fatherland” in one side and “virtue and braveness” on the other sode.
