Transplanting the trees that have previously been in the median, planting a further ~500 trees and ~11000 bushes, three years of maintenance on these, renewing 21600 m2 grass, one Unimog for everything from mowing the lawn to catenary maintenance.

Not what I meant. I meant you should deliberately write in that genre, instead of accidentally writing something sort of adjacent.

First, text-to-speech would boom. Second, audio/video formats (e.g. podcasts) would grow at the expense of text formats (e.g. blogs). Third, institutions would rework the "fill out this form" paradigm to be accessible. But fair enough. Next issue: students should be allowed to test out.

What I meant was that society works with the population it has. If half the population couldn't read, then society would figure out ways for people to live productive lives without being able to read. Thus literacy would cease to be "critically important"; could still pay well, like programming.
100
Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
(The fancy term is "functional illiteracy".) Literacy has become a can't-do-without skill exactly because most people can read. The simple guess is that most would continue to learn to read because it's so useful. The weird alternative is devaluation of literacy due to widespread illiteracy.

Let's still grant that school has *some* benefit. But we can compare that benefit to spending ...first, much of childhood and all of adolescence on school. Don't bury this. This is the first cost. Second, after that, we also spend heaps of money, tying up labor as schoolteachers. Is it worth it?
100
Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
Indeed. School's benefit is very much squeezed between: - from one side, parents trying (with varying levels of success) to teach their kids explains away school's benefit; - from the other side, we checked and many kids can't read. Whether phonics would help is a question for later.

They aren't trivial, I listed them exactly because they do justify K-4 or so. K-6, even. (Though my impression is that upper-middle class kids commonly *enter* school not-quite-illiterate.) And yes, I learned two non-Latin alphabets quite easily. Did mostly forget the language, though.

Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 17/05/2026
- Professor, don't cede the point that "college fails to teach knowledge" so easily. - Then what, for that matter, do K-12 teach, that most adults in a society reliably retain? Reading, writing, and 3 of the 4 basic arithmetic ops (but not division).

Sure -- but that's because the whole wizarding population is *tiny*. Several thousand to low tens of thousands in all of Britain. Small town or very small town.

The contrary position is exactly that the credential represents *selection* rather than learning. Certification that you aren't a troublemaker, that you don't e.g. lash out in N years of being made to do random useless tasks. Like a certification that you are taller than [height].

Even if that were true, it still shouldn't matter. The traders they hired *can know* that there will be shortage prices a few months from now. That they will be rewarder for buying oil today. Perhaps almost all of them are playing Keynesian beauty contest *with a short (<1 month) window*?

As in, "cooperation" would here mean nothing more than every government on its own deciding that ...they won't do anything. Not remove these taxes, and not talk about possibly removing them. This (or "of course we won't do that") reassures all other governments to do the same.

Not even PD; a mere Stag Hunt. Not getting it right reflects even worse on us. In the PD, only defect-defect is Nash. Coop-coop is not Nash, which is why it's worth studying. In the Stag Hunt, both D-D and C-C are Nash. You only need to trust the other player(s) to do the obvious right thing.

Throw in a plausible version of the Julian Jaynes hypothesis? Internal monologue-> not your voice; your ba/daemon/genius talking to you. Emotions-> bodily symptoms (no "afraid" but "quivering"). Decisions-> pray to god and tell you (or see ba/genius above). Sing, o muse, and I will repeat after you.

The degrowthers don't want to do more with less. Somehow they ended up in an unhealthy place where they want to do less; where they don't want to benefit humanity; where they want fewer people, poorer per capita. I don't understand this worldview either, but it exists: www.vhemt.org

At Oxford/Cambridge, institutions grow and shrink over time, and thus repeatedly "digest" each other's former parts. Opening or walling off doors, putting rooms to different uses. The result is allegedly a fantastic mess. Why would adjacent medieval houses' floor levels match?

Yes, because a "Yerevan radio" version of that happened to me a month or two ago. During talking about politics-in-general, a relative told me she believes in the blood libel. (By content; she didn't seem aware it has a name, or any distinction from other facts about the world.)

From a transit point of view, it's stupid to break frequency between duplicate-by-class *networks*. But where frequency is cheap and the userbase of future WaymoÜberPod is willing to pay a premium fare (by itself sufficient to create the split!), it could work anyway.
010
Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
Trains invented having 1st, 2nd, 3rd class coaches in one train. Airplanes have business, premium-econ and economy classes in one plane. At one point in the US, buses used to have a front and a back. With frequency so cheap, they could be separate vehicles, if that is what people will pay for.
110
Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
Driverless tech makes frequency cheaper. (See above: transit desert to decent frequency.) This is going to make leftists angry, but in places with abundant frequency (e.g. today 10 minute headways -> future ~2 min?) you can afford to break frequency by service class (2* incompatible 4-min).
110
Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
So if you can introduce a "new" type of public transit as an upper-middle-class (bougie?) thing, distinct from the bus (which is for smelly-poor-people), and it's useful service, I think they will ride it. IMO it is natural for robotaxis to evolve into robobuses (no, not buses, robo-pod-things).

Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
Narrowly-construed carbrain does exist (see "trucks"). But AFAIK lots of Americans very specifically hate the bus but have positive vibes for streetcars/trolleys. (E.g. "lifestyle center" malls install a few hundred feet of tram track.)
130
Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
"Americans hate buses and don't know what they are" -> call the driverless minibuses (with a side of marshrutka) some other word. Call them pods, for all I care. Driverless, they can run at very convenient frequencies (<5 min) where today you have nothing, or an excuse service (a bus an hour).

Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
Yep, this really should have a scatterplot version. Another example: according to the estimates, more than half of the households above $100k are also above $1m.

Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
Yes -- so keep them, if you want to. That's why he didn't list the agents in the costs that can be cut: bsky.app/profile/ccha... Though there are both "back-office" fare-collection-related employees, and in some cases "meat faregates" who add disproportionately little to security.

Basil Marte @basilmarte.bsky.social · 26/04/2026
Yep, we Hungarians say we're in Central Europe (V4, once-Jagiellion lands?). If e.g. Germans/Austrians (who we say are in Western Europe) say they are in Central, and we in Eastern Europe -- that's no big deal. On the other hand, if they say that Hungary is in the *Balkans*, that's fighting words.

So, I: - wish for vehicle shape regulation (de facto ban the pedestrian-mulchers by moving to the HGV license category); - longer-term wish for a general decrease in VMT/capita and car ownership/capita, +walkability, +bikes, +transit, and yes, higher fees and administrative friction for car owners.

Because everyone else was correctly in awe that he did the rocket thing, and it's weird to simultaneously praise and condemn someone. "But he just connected the engineers and the financing?" Even if true, still valuable work -- if anybody else could have done it, how come nobody else has done it?
