Ireland's artist basic income returned €1.39 for every €1 spent. They made it permanent. South Korea just announced plans to follow. Now Scotland too.

We used to have 7 day workweeks. Then labour fought long and hard for a day off, then 2, and better work conditions all around. There's no reason we can't keep progressing, given the promise of AI, robotics, and labour-saving technology. UBI is a central part of this vision.
Toronto Star headline on boosting productivity by working less, with image showing shift from 5-day to 4-day workweek.Summary shows four-day workweek boosts productivity, encourages AI adoption, and raised revenue 15% in Canadian pilot.

RBC: over half of Canadian parents are subsidizing their adult kids' rent and groceries. Not because young people won't work. Because full-time wages don't cover full-time costs anymore. A country can't run on "hope your parents have money."

One of the most popular & successful programs of all time: Alaska's universal dividend paid to all residents every year. They agreed that natural resources are the common wealth of the people and should benefit all current & future generations. Canada should learn from this.

A lot of people hear “basic income” and assume it means more bureaucracy. The goal is actually the opposite: simpler income security, less stress, and more stability. Economic security should be easier to access — not harder to survive without. #BasicIncome

“People will waste it” gets said every time economic security comes up. But when people have stability, they usually spend money on what they actually need — housing, food, bills, breathing room. Basic income is about dignity, not punishment. #BasicIncome

$100 costs more than money now — it costs time, energy, and burnout. More shifts, less rest, less ability to actually live. People aren’t lazy. The cost of living is rising faster than wages. Economic security should include time to breathe. #BasicIncome

You’re not bad with money. The math is broken. A lot of people followed the “plan” — school, work, responsibility — but wages didn’t keep up with rent or rising costs. People deserve an economy where work leads to stability, not constant survival mode. #BasicIncome

Activism isn’t just for people with unlimited time or expertise. Most community change happens because ordinary people contribute what they realistically can. Even a few intentional days can build stronger communities, relationships, and collective power. #CommunityCare #BasicIncome

A strong basic income wouldn’t be one flat number everywhere. Living costs in Waterloo Region aren’t the same as everywhere else — and economic security should mean more than barely surviving. Housing, groceries, stability: that’s the baseline. #BasicIncome

“Basic income is too expensive” compared to what? Right now, billions are spent dealing with the consequences of poverty instead of preventing it. Basic income isn’t an extra cost — it’s a different policy choice about what kind of society we want. #BasicIncome

You’re not bad with money. The math is broken. Prices rise, hours change, emergencies happen — and people are still expected to plan perfectly around instability. A livable income means security, not constant financial risk. #BasicIncome #IncomeSecurity

$500 used to feel like a lot. Now it disappears into rent, groceries, or bills almost instantly. In Waterloo Region, housing costs keep rising faster than incomes — especially for young people. The math just isn’t working anymore. #BasicIncome

Basic income isn’t “just welfare.” Most welfare systems punish people for earning more, missing paperwork, or trying to move forward. Basic income is different: it’s about dignity, stability, and economic security without constant surveillance. #BasicIncome

“Budget better” doesn’t mean much when rent takes most of a paycheck. In Waterloo Region, students, renters, and young workers are being priced out of stability. This isn’t individual failure — it’s a system making survival harder every year. #BasicIncome

Work delivers too little certainty for too many. As precarious employment becomes the 'new normal,' we need a new solution. If insecurity is the 'new normal' for work, then basic income must be the 'new normal' for survival.

This was me at our Toronto rally in 2021. Even people with jobs today are seeing their leverage crushed by AI. It's not just about how many are fired, it's how many aren't asking for a raise, switching jobs, or hired in the first place. UBI is a lifeline of leverage.

I don't like talking about the cost of universal basic income, not because it's some high number, but because it assumes not doing it is free. We spend $1.5 TRILLION a year on the costs of child poverty alone. We cut child poverty by 40% for a cost of $100B in 2021. That would have been a $500B GAIN

I used to tell my students, who were almost always reflexively against UBI, that it'd take the bullets out of the gun. Imagine if employers had to make employment attractive? If they couldn't threaten you with hunger and homelessness? Or waste your time

In the age of AI, it’s time to take UBI seriously. We already have enough resources to meet everyone’s basic needs. When we’re not fighting to survive, we can finally start to live and become who we’re meant to be. 💜
Two versions of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs are shown. The top pyramid includes all five levels — physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization — but only a few people stand at the base, struggling to reach higher levels. In the second pyramid, labeled “UNCONDITIONAL BASIC INCOME,” the lower two levels (physiological and safety) are grayed out, symbolizing that everyone’s basic needs are met. A joyful, larger crowd reaches the higher levels of belonging, esteem, and self-actualization.

Myth: If we had a Basic Income, everyone would stop working. Fact: People work for 2 main reasons: 1. They have an urge to do something constructive with their talents; 2. They want a good standard of living. Numerous studies have demonstrated that most people continue to work when receiving BI.
