In 1797, Thomas Paine proposed a national fund to pay every person compensation for the natural inheritance lost when land became private property. That's basic income, two centuries before the term existed.
"To create a national fund, out of which there shall be paid to every person, when arrived at the age of twenty-one years, the sum of fifteen pounds sterling, as a compensation in part, for the loss of his or her natural inheritance, by the introduction of the system of landed property: And also, the sum of ten pounds per annum, during life, to every person now living, of the age of fifty years, and to all others as they shall arrive at that age." ~ Thomas Paine, Agrarian Justice 1797

Ireland's artist basic income returned €1.39 for every €1 spent. They made it permanent. South Korea just announced plans to follow. Now Scotland too.

If cheap labor undercuts wages, that's an argument for stronger wage floors and labor protections, not for excluding people from a universal payment. UBI isn't employer-set, so it's actually more resilient to that dynamic than wages are.

"Vetted to contribute" already happens through existing visa and labor systems. That's not a new idea, it's the status quo.

Nearly all economic research finds immigrants are net contributors, not takers, they work, pay taxes, start businesses, and fill labor gaps often left unfilled otherwise.

Since 1979, worker productivity is up 93.7%. Typical worker pay is up only 32.7%. The gains kept flowing, they just stopped flowing to the people generating them. Would a guaranteed income floor give workers enough leverage to close that gap, or is it too structural for UBI alone to fix?
Line chart titled "Output is up. Pay isn't." tracking worker productivity versus typical worker pay, indexed to 100 in 1979, through 2026. The productivity line climbs steadily to 193.7. The typical worker pay line rises much more slowly, reaching only 132.7. Source: Economic Policy Institute, Productivity-Pay Tracker. Basic Income Action logo and handle in the header.

Nothing wrong with raising immigration as its own topic, but that's not what's happening here, you're hijacking the thread to drop a flat, unsupported assertion about immigration rather than engaging with the claim we actually made.

Basic income isn't a handout. It's a fair claim on the wealth we all keep generating together. What would change for you if that claim were guaranteed?
Getting paid at the time doesn't erase the value you created. Infrastructure and institutions compound across generations, each builds on what came before and passes forward more than they were paid for. That surplus is growth. Basic income is an equal and fair claim on that ongoing surplus.

Unconditional basic income, especially with how things have gone and continue to go, is like drawing a line in the sand for each other. It's saying my neighbors shouldn't have to prove why they get to survive. They just should.

Co-op farms and land subsidies help people who are already positioned to farm. UBI is built for everyone, no requirements, no conditions, reaching people those programs can't. That's the actual goal, income security for all, not just for those following one specific path.

Basic income isn't charity, and it isn't taking from those who've earned something to give to those who haven't. It's your natural inheritance, owed to you simply by virtue of your own inherent worth, a floor like the land we all need to stand on, not something you have to prove or earn.

Every child is born needing the same things: air, water, land, and people willing to keep them safe. None of it is earned, it's owed just by existing. Somewhere along the way, air stayed free, but land got fenced off, and safety became conditional, and even then, only certain work gets rewarded.

Basic income can be thought of as capitalism with a conscience. It puts back the reward for everyone's merit by recognizing that wealth is never created in isolation. Every success builds on public infrastructure, shared knowledge, and the work of many others.

Some argue basic income will lead to socialism. But interest in socialism is already growing, and it comes from the economic conditions people live in now, not from a policy that hasn't passed. Basic income is simply a way to recognize the wealth we all help create.

Good point, and a reminder this idea has never belonged to one side. Nixon's Family Assistance Plan was a step in that direction, but it fell short: it mostly covered families with kids and had work requirements. Basic income drops both. Also see our post on NIT vs cash:

Fair question, but so far it's a theoretical concern. Alaska's dividend has run for decades with no drop in overall employment, and part-time work rose. Importing cheap labour is a separate policy choice, and a basic income makes workers harder to undercut.

It's also more than a floor. A basic income is our share in the property rights we were denied: the land, the resources, and the wealth we all help create. Not charity, but what we're owed. Wealth is not created in a vacuum.

Good question. The risk is real with wage subsidies tied to a job, since employers can pay less. A basic income goes to the worker, not the employer, and it lets people walk away from bad pay. Other policies can help too, but UBI raises the floor on its own.

Agreed. And beyond a living wage, we need a basic income too. Not everyone has a paycheck: caregivers, students, people between jobs. A floor under everyone means rent and groceries don't depend on having a job. It also gives workers the power to say no to poverty wages, which pushes pay up.

No one builds wealth alone. Workers, infrastructure, customers, and public systems all contribute. If every worker vanished tomorrow, no fortune would keep running. We're not just individuals competing for property, we're shareholders in the wealth we all help create together. So, UBI is your share.

Fair point, you're right to push back. That framing echoes fraud rhetoric used to justify benefit cuts, when the real problem is people not applying because proving illness is exhausting or humiliating. Even granting it's ableist rhetoric, it still makes the case: no gatekeeping, no proving.

To add to why "you don't look sick" is such a common challenge: It's estimated that 1 in 10 Americans live with an invisible disability. Non-visible disability means a disability that isn't immediately apparent. Of people with chronic illness, 96% have an invisible disability.

When aid depends on proving you're sick enough, some learn to perform it, and administrators learn to doubt everyone. Honest people get caught in that cycle, forced to justify real pain. Basic income breaks the loop. No means test means no incentive to perform, and no reason to doubt. Just support.
