Pro tip for the PC gamers out there who like sci fi - there's a neat little indie called
DECADE out, wherein you command three 8-year olds to go back in time for ten year intervals in hopes of changing the apocalyptic present.
The wrinkle being you're all post-apocalypse children and don't know anything about the past, so you have to learn about it as you go.
You send Kid A back in time to an undefined past point and three minutes later he comes back as an 18 year old with some info, and the game will turn out differently if you send 18-year old Kid A back to a different time, or send 8-year old Kid B to to the first destination to act on info learned from Kid A's jaunt.
Presumably the game ends and you get whatever present you've effected when all three of your Kids have aged to the point where they can no longer go back in time.

Chatting abt writing the internet and how easy it is to do it badly w/ @flameswallower.bsky.social and thought of this recent bit from a newsletter I read
Smartphones don't seem to fit neatly into the world of stories we've inherited. In general, it's hard to write compelling narratives that involve a cell phone; many novelists often conspicuously leave them out or describe their roles in our lives only vaguely. One of my favorite accounts of the problem, which I've written about elsewhere, appears in a 2011 letter in which J.M. Coetzee explains to Paul Auster why "twenty-first-century tools of communication like the mobile phone are absent" from much of his work. "So much of the mechanics of novel writing, past and present, is taken up with making information available to characters or keeping it from them, with getting people together in the same room or holding them apart," he writes. "If, all of a sudden, everyone has access to more or less everyone else - electronic access, that is — what becomes of all that plotting?"

worth reading ! salvage.zone/on-theoretic...
But class disorganisation is only part of the story. What happens in its absence, aside from the groveling and favor-begging? The ruling class today is in a period of high epochal decadence and therefore visible decay. By this I do not mean it is in decline or weakening: it is more exploitative, extractive, imperialist and powerful than ever before.
But in this cultural context, where the symbols and positions of the ruling class are so unsettled and their worldview disrupted, the would-be philosopher CEO has emerged.
The well-heeled bureaucratic experts of the Fordist and neoliberal era have been traded in for philosophical dabblers disconnected from democratic accountability and the constraints of popular culture. They openly fantasise about colonising Mars and turning every worker into a robot, like Elon Musk, or cryogenic freezing and the coming of the Antichrist, like Peter Thiel. That conspiracy theories and apocalyptic thinking run through the Right and the highest echelons of the corporate class today is evidence of their decay.

Think of what might have been lost. The depths of hardship that rescheduling might have introduced
A Tennessee woman who was set to be executed on Wednesday was still alive after two syringes of lethal drugs had been administered, her lawyers said.
The apparent failure came after a lengthy legal limbo delayed the execution of the woman, Christa Pike, by about nine hours.
The state had raced to go ahead with the execution before the day ended and to avoid having to reschedule.

Thinking abt this in relation to a post from Danny Lavery from today
Or there will be a little factoid about the person of the day, and you never get any real details about their life, just that they "taught people" or "showed the world" how to lead with grace, or create with confidence, shit like that.

Once, last year, at the last minute I was asked to fill in for a speaker to give a presentation on Martin Luther King Day and I couldn't figure out why the presentation didn't include anything like dates or names or locations or real, concrete information, and about halfway through I realized it was all Al-generated. Just vague sentiment. Martin Luther King taught the world how to lead with grace. And he changed the world. And he was always there.

I don't like that sort of thing. I like to pick the movies we play every night myself. I think about it careful, I take other people's tastes into consideration, and I like movies. I want to do a good job of it. And if l've got to give a last-minute presentation about somebody, la like to be able to tell you where he lived.

I love this concept art. Textbook “widowed image”, in Charles Baxter’s usage
“Hopkins appeared to believe that images became memorable when some crucial part of their meaning had been stripped from them. Sometimes an obsessive image is the product of a trauma. The trauma cannot be remembered but has left its trace in misfit details. You may not remember your violent abusive uncle very well, but his blue glass ashtray or his decoy duck stays in your memory as if riveted there. The burden of the feeling is taken on by the objects. Shock is registered through these objects but the origin of the shock is protected. The objects, as a consequence, have a feeling of impatience and scale, as a fetish does.

Hopkins describes these obsessive images of objects as things for which he has not “found the law.” They are unfulfilled in meaning, but they take up a lot of room in the memory as if in compensation. They seem both gratuitous and inexplicably necessary.”

M John Harrison, THE END OF EVERYTHING
Midnight, Friday, September 6tb: When you talk about your parents, you aren't really talking about people. You're talking about some force or organising principle in your life. Everything has contributed to it, including acts of unrelated human beings, and even of your own, which had nothing to do with them. You call that whole complex 'your parents, because it originated with them. Any fresh input gets mixed up with them, fusing into a substrate from which you emerge different but the same. My parents seemed paralysed. They never bought their own house. They never moved from this one, although they always had plans; so many plans, even atthe end. Afterwards I bought the house. I bought the out-buildings. But those two still irritate me, scratching about in their failed life as if they had no right to anything. When I look round this place, I remember the clutter of it before I took possession.
[No date, some charring): It's sometimes quite affecting when a receiver tries to speak to you. By then, they can't commu-nicate, of course. They make their whistlings and flutings, an occasional gargling or gagging noise. What do they see, if they see anything? The same future as my instruments? Or something else altogether? Their experience, after all, is as the detector, not the data it receives. There's a central distinction here. Their subjectivity, if they retain one, consists in being whatever the iGhetti built them to be - and we don't even know what that is.
[No date, extensively charred]: Down in the town, behaviour comes in discrete knots. Long before the iGhetti arrived, everyone was playing out a separate fantasy. Unable to pretend to sleep and suddenly needing something familiar, I go and sit with the system. There isn't much help there. Less and less is familiar any more, I realise. I no longer belong to myself, let alone anyone else. A dangerous condition to be in. In the morning, I sit on the sofa and the sun shines across my eyes, making it impossible to concentrate. Time draws out. This isn't the first time I've felt alienated in this house. I'm still grinding my teeth.Sunday, August 12tb: This! From a letter of Pierre Curie to Georges Gouy, April 14th, 1906 - In my opinion, there is here a whole domain of completely new facts and physical states of space about which we have had no conception.
Tuesday, September 2 4tb: As soon as I could after I bought the house, I had the kitchen demolished. It was an ancient extension in a different-coloured brick - more like a scullery - with its huge, ancient sink. Carbolic soap, green chenille tablecloth, long drawn-out nauseas of food and smells and boredom.
From it, you could only enter the old garden, walled, narrow as an alley, with a bluish brick path and barley sugar brick edgings to the vegetable bed. This brick had a hard finish, a metallic, clinkered look. Rusted buckets upturned over rhu-barb. The smell of that, and the smell of the roses and sunshine and dust. There aren't many anagrams of the word insect.
[No date, beavy charring): I suppose I just want to give them a voice.

For Tan, this alleged away-blower of a robot "called my dental insurer, [gave] it my member ID, answered a security question and waited on hold before transferring me to the representative." Wow, you can really wait on hold. "For now, a limited number of Muse users have access to the call feature," notes Tan, which presumably means the offshore call center is currently only staffed up to handle the demands of one New York Times reviewer. It also put his credit card statements in a spreadsheet and identified a duplicate subscription, it "could efficiently fill out online forms," whatever that means, but it couldn't buy movie tickets or baseball tickets. It made an annoying podcast that even he couldn't stand. And finally, it offered to take over "one of my favorite pastimes," buying secondhand ceramic bowls. "While the agent worked," writes Tan, "I watched its movements through a tiny browser window, where it navigated websites like a human with a mouse and cursor."Did Allison Johnson do any better? Her Facebook robot, "Marley — one of the suggested names you can give Muse's avatar... a generically cute snowman-meets-puppy," successfully emailed a landscaper and a junk remover, put a seven dollar espresso machine part in an online cart but could not actually order it, failed to change a security system subscription (The Verge doesn't qualify for phone call capabilities apparently, lol), and once again mostly just took over Johnson's hobby shopping - in this case for camping equipment.

One of the best oral histories ever compiled
Rivers Cuomo: My gorgeous and atrocious sexual desires had reached a boiling point. I thought that maybe if I expressed them, I would be able to resolve them, and maybe even meet the flawless, abominable woman of my dreams. But I didn't think I could truly express myself until I had opened my mind to a world outside of rock shows and sex. Which was why I decided to go to college.Rivers Cuomo: At Harvard, I kept myself completely isolated a lot of the time-noise-canceling headphones, blindfold, hazmat suit, everything. I would sit there all bundled up in my room, shred an entire Shakespeare play, eat it, throw it up, and then, as I was puking, I would be thinking, "What is love? What is sex? Why do they hate each other? Will they ever get married?" Eventually my roommate would come banging on my door telling me it was time for class, but I wouldn't let him in.
Patrick Wilson: My instrument's the kind where I get to sit down. "Drumming" is the verb and
"drum" is the noun.

The problem with calling this kind of thing a “moral panic” (which afaik Aviv does not) sort of tacitly puts the gloss of force majeure onto the thing — a lot of short-sighted parties pursuing their own interests and creating an effect in aggregate. But this was, basically, a few motivated assholes
The release of the Thirlwall Report, which is more than a thousand pages long, creates even more momentum to assume that the questions its leaders have been asking are the right ones.
Three of Letby's bosses at the Countess hospital were already arrested, in June, 2025, on suspicion of "gross negligence manslaughter," presumably for failing to stop Letby sooner, and are currently out on bail. Three months ago, a doctor from the Countess who testified in the Thirlwall Inquiry about supportive messages he'd written to Letby was dismissed from his job at a different N.H.S. hospital, for having shared confidential patient information with her.
A day after his dismissal, he was reportedly found collapsed in his car; he eventually died, of causes that have not been disclosed.

Gladwell talks with David Remnick about how gun-control advocates have got the problem wrong, and why he thinks that a persistent dynamic of under-policing and over-incarcerating is at the root of America's problem. Portion of a transcript from William F. Buckley’s FIRING LINE, circa 1997:

MR. BUCKLEY: Well, to what extent is this retrograde thinking traceable to the lack of religion in the public schools?
MR. AMBROSIO: Well, perhaps Father can answer that one.
MR. BUCKLEY: The neglect of it.
REV. HOLMES: I think it's even more than that: not only that religion isn't taught in the public schools, but even the religion that's taught in parochial schools, the idea that religion is a private matter and it has nothing to do with my public behavior is what really is at the bottom of moral relativism, I believe, the idea that what I do for one hour in church or in my synagogue or in the mosque has nothing to do with what I do the other 167 hours of the week. It flies in the face of the feeling that we all got, for instance, when Mother Teresa died. We were all as a world brought to a--well, a recognition that there was something incredibly special about this woman, that-- In my class we called her the best human being alive. She was not, however, just someone who happened to be someone who was doing good things. In a class on moral values we try and understand that virtuous people do virtuous things, and they are not separate ideas. But when students come to class believing that religion has nothing to do with my public life, they are shutting themselves off from the true source of moral imagination that will help them live 168 hours a week as a person of integrity.

W.G.: I suspect, John, that you want not things that will be loved but things that will be promiscuous. If you had a daughter to send into the world, would you want everybody to love her? I might be at my winery turning out bottles of Thunderbird which everybody loves.
It wouldn't give me much satisfaction. It's not just that books are loved, but why they're loved. If you've given them the properties that make them worthwhile, then it doesn't matter if no one does love them. Frequently very few people do, or a work will go unobserved for years.180
(JG) … meanness and he expresses it very well. But one ultimately says, "y don't feel like reading Pope tonight. Kojak is on; I'll get my meanness quick. Billy Gas: the man with the juice
John goes on to say that in writing he faces the problem of revision and getting his best words by constantly asking "Is this really what I believe?" I think that's fine. I don't care how the right words get on the page as long as they're the right words. But my condition is much bleaker. I don't know, most of the time, what I believe. Indeed, as a fiction writer I find it convenient not to believe things. Not to disbelieve things either, just to move into a realm where everything is held in suspension. You hope that the amount of meaning that you can pack into the book will always be more than you are capable of consciously understanding. Otherwise, the book is likely to be as thin as you are. You have to trick your medium into doing far better than you, as a conscious and clearheaded person, might manage. So one of the problems that I face is exactly the opposite of John's. John's

Conversations with John Gardner
that's better than playing golf just to have a good score. But because I'm hooked on the symbolism of getting a ball into a hole, ultimately whether you play golf well or not is determined by how well you score-your performance-and that's what ought to be used as the aesthetic measure. If a beautiful book is a source of virtue and a source of truth fine. That's jolly. The composer of such a work would be a fine philosopher, a noble saint, and an artist. But he's not a good artist because he's a fine philosopher or a noble
saint.
.... There is a fundamental divergence about what literature is. I don't want to subordinate beauty to truth and goodness. John and others have values which they think more important. Beauty, after all, is not very vital for most people. I think it is very important, in the cleanliness of the mind, to know why a particular thing is good. A lot of people judge, to use a crude example, the dinner good because of the amount of calories it has. Well, that is important if you don't want to gain weight, but what has that got to do with the quality of the food? Moral judgments on art constantly confuse the quality of the food. I would also claim that my view is more catholic. It will allow in as good writers more than this other view will; John lets hardly anybody in the door.
J.G.: I love Bill's writing, and I honestly think that Bill is the only writer in America that I would let in the door. For 24 years I have been screaming at him, sometimes literally screaming at him, saying
"Bill, you are wasting the greatest genius ever given to America by fiddling around when you could be doing big, important things." What he can do with language is magnificent, but then he turns it against itself.……
