92-year-old Naomi Hulme stopped driving. But that didn’t mean she wasn’t out and about in her hometown of San Francisco. Naomi, AKA Nona, would never live in a city without public transportation. “BART is how seniors like me can get around,” she said.

You may recognize Naomi Hulme, AKA Nona, from BART ads that have gone up around the system. Earlier this year, Nona passed away. Her family asked us to share this latest BART Connects story in her memory and in honor of the many years she spent riding BART to see the people she loved.

Did you know trains used to run on the Bay Bridge? Bob Simon of the Western Railway Museum showed us one of their old bridge units. The Key System ran the trains until 1958 when car lanes replaced tracks on the bridge. Trains wouldn't connect the Bay again until the Transbay Tube opened in 1974.

This is the story of a modern marvel – its past, present, and future. It is also a story about people – those who ushered the Tube into existence and those who are still working to ensure it stands for generations to come. Read more www.bart.gov/news/article...

To some, it was a preposterous notion – train rides under the ocean?!? -- but the nonbelievers quickly hushed on that fateful day in 1974. They, too, wanted to take an underwater voyage from Oakland to San Francisco.

The 3.6-mile-long Tube was unlike anything the world had ever seen. At the time, it was the longest immersed tube in the world, a title it held until 2010, and it mystified the public, who were mesmerized by the idea of a miles-long structure sitting 135 feet below the water’s surface.

Crime against BART riders is down 67% per million trips since the end of 2024! It’s been one year since BART finished installing Next Generation Fare Gates at all 50 stations. Since then, we’ve seen significant changes across the system.
This image shows two line graphs illustrating data related to BART. The top graph, titled "Crimes per 1M Passengers," shows a decline from around 11 in Q1 of FY 25 to approximately 7 by Q4 of FY 26. Notable points indicate the installation of new fare gates at 15 stations in Q2 of FY 25 and all stations by Q3 of FY 26. The bottom graph, titled "Trains Delayed Due to Police & Security," depicts a reduction from around 2,000 in Q1 of FY 25 to about 1,000 in Q4 of FY 26. There is a similar installation note in Q2 of FY 25. BART logo and the words "Let's go." are at the bottom left.
