Call for Papers/Workshops: Romance, Revolution and Reform Conference - Ecosystems in the Long Nineteenth Century @rrrjournal.bsky.social invites submissions for their next conference, which will be at Royal Holloway and online on 15 Jan 2027. Abstracts due 25 Oct 2026. www.bars.ac.uk/blog/?p=6580
CfP poster for Ecosystems in the Long Nineteenth Century, 15th January 2027, Royal Holloway, University of London (Hybrid). “We need, urgently, to reconnect with our planet, and recognise ourselves as inseparable rather than special; reliant upon rather than dominating” (Erica
Fudge, 2022)
This conference examines the long nineteenth century as the birth of the Anthropocene. As scientific developments reconfigured what it meant to be human, global ecosystems had already been permanently altered. Fossil fuels, cash crops, forest decimation, and hunger for imperial commodities left scars on ecosystems, communities, and bodies. Artists, exhibitors, and writers found new homes in the bustling ecosystems of steel and smoke, while others sought ‘gleams of a remoter world’ (Shelley, 1816) in pockets of “untouched” nature.
Ecosystems encourage us to reflect on the networks between humans and the “more than human” in the long nineteenth century.
We welcome 15-20 minute papers and creative workshops for our in-person conference. We especially encourage submissions from PGRs and ECRs.

We're back for day 2 #BARS2026! What do we mean by a "new original"? How can we continue to celebrate the materiality, marginalia, and notation of archival texts and subsequent editorial work? Thank you to Ruth Abbott for a brilliant talk on the Wordsworths' collaborations through their notebooks!

Our Stephen Copley Lecture is being delivered by the wonderful Mary Favret! How does our work as Romanticists work through the illegible? Are we to be understood by what we have inscribed, or projected? What about those figures of the past, that remain etched on surfaces prone to decay? #BARS2026

A masterclass in responding to brilliant papers, Jon Mee offered a provocative and historically sensitive reflection on the Romantic experience as one of coming together. What shape might that take? How can the first person plural express a sense of the collective?

"Romantic Retrospection" invites us to come to terms with the past, its artistic and poetical expression, and its ideas. Thank you to Jonathan Sachs for taking us through an experience of the past as written by Wordsworth and Byron, and the critics that have followed those lines.

Poster for 'BARS Digital: TikTok, Short-form Content Creation, and Romantic Research', which reads: 'BARS’s TikTok account provides a platform for sharing tidbits of Romanticism with a wider audience. All of our members are welcome to contribute to the TikTok page to share their expertise, but we understand that short-form video is a confusing format for many people to work in. In this lunchtime workshop run by the BARS communications team (Amy Wilcockson and Chloe Wilcox), we will provide practical information of how to make TikToks for us, showing you:
- How TikTok works;
- How to choose a topic to speak about and tailor it to the time limit;
- How to film and edit videos.
The workshop will include a breakout session in which you’ll have the opportunity to draft a script for your own video.
We hope that attending will make the prospect of making a TikTok for us less intimidating, and allow us to feature a wider range of expertise on our account (from people like you!). It’ll also help you with other academic and Romantic social media work by getting you familiar with the mysterious but ever-growing world of short-form vertical video.'
