Another brilliant excursion in @johnhunter.bsky.social ‘s Ghostbusters/CoC mashup “Who Ya Gonna Cthulhu?” We were investigating a flipper fossil at the museum when a yellow hooded figure , a spell caster and a deep one turned up.

Soulwax. Three drummers, four big crazy synths. Good stuff.

You want a film about a driven sporting prodigy that’s not Marty Supreme? Very clever, witty and beautifully abstract. When I first saw the trailer I questioned how to make a drama out of the events portrayed and they do a magnificent job.

Had a great time at this this years Grogmeet. Thanks to @thegrognardfiles.bsky.social and Blythy for organising. A Very Cthulhu Practice with @asako-soh.bsky.social had us uncovering a dark experiment at Lowlands Uni but we had Jock’s medicinal support. Also a menhir heist in Deepwood Shadows

Night Manager 2 ep3 drops today on BBC and Prime catches up with all 3 episodes so far for the rest of the world. Lots of beautiful Colombia in this one, especially everyone’s favourite Colombia PI - Martin played by Diego Santos. Also you really, really need to see the final scene of tonight’s ep.

Never watched “Edge of Darkness” despite being recommended many times. It’s on BBC iPlayer now and Ho-ly Sheeeeet! Only 1 EP in and it’s awesome. The immediacy of the politics, the scale fevers office and hotel lobby is packed, fuming in the M1), the amount of yorkshire people saying “bastard”

In the build up to Halloween I rewatched Tom Holland’s (not that one!) Fright Night. Roddy McDowall is such an amazing physical actor. Transmits so much with reactions

One Battle After Another is cracking stuff. It’s subtle and funny with beautiful imagery presented without pomp. The skateboarders leading Leo across the rooftop, the car chase on long lenses, Leo’s dressing gown, Sean Penn’s arse clenched walk, Greenwood’s jagged score. Effortlessly brilliant

Leonardo di Caprio, wearing a shabby dressing gown, stood in the middle of a desert road holding a hunting rifle and a scanner.

Got to see a preview of The Long Walk. It is Shawshank levels of King brilliance. Absolutely devastating and uplifting at various times. Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson phenomenal leads. Jo Willems cinematography and Mark Yoshikawa’s editing in particular are outstanding.

Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson in the film The Long Walk. It is very hot, they are walking in a rural setting and they are looking back at another walker.

Tonight we ran @olddog.games Andor hack of Fria Ligen’s Twilight 2000. We hacked the Americatown scenario to YavinTown and our rebels managed to escape with some vital intel AND stop/kill the autocrat. The setting works well throwing suitable ambiguous dilemmas for the PCs to deal with.

Phenomenonal final on @olddog.games Deathmatch Island. Players ( @johnhunter.bsky.social & @voyager3.bsky.social included) brilliant - 3 decided to break the game but 1 played to win ensuing carnage was tragic winner eventually woke up in a boat heading back to the Islands. Highly recommended.

Watched 28 Years Later and I think it might have a touch of genius about it. Flecks of folk horror, elegiac about England, moving and even hopeful with an amazing performance by Alfie Williams. And the final scene is tremendous. Top stuff.

Companion is great fun. Even more so if you can watch it knowing as little as possible (the first trailer does a great job of setting the tone without any reveals).

I don’t know ButtonMan (originally misread that as Button Moon!) but even more so than BitD it’s low dice roll and needs very engaged players as they are vital to narrating the story.

Mike Hodges’ “Pulp” on talking pictures tv. It stars Michael Caine as a pulp writer trying to solve a murder in Malta. It is beautifully odd and was the inspiration for Jarvis Cocker’s name for the band (and maybe his own style?)

As is traditional we had a Xmas ttrpg. Wh40k via Mothership. Our inquisitorial agents land on the planet of Amanger, had to find Maria and her baby who were being tended on by triplets named Kang and some Beastmen in a battery farm. And I made the players sing at the end. @voyager3.bsky.social

10th anniversary rewatch of #71 this week. Haven’t seen it on the big screen since it was released and blown away again by how bloody powerful it is. I know Point Break is back in cinemas but I reckon the foot chase in 71 would give Point Break’s foot chase a run for its money (all puns intended)
