Homecoming theme this year is all about travel. Today's spirit day was to dress like you were traveling. For me that's often heading to @aapthq.bsky.social so I dressed appropriately. 🧪🎢

This was my grandmother's manual braille stylus and slate. I think I will offer to do students' names on thw front of their lab notebooks. 🧪🎢

At the #AAPTSM26 meeting I made and gave away over 100 bracelets that said "physics." Today my juniors got to make their own while seniors were gone at Senior Picnic (they'll get a chance later). As "big" as these "big kids" are, they still like being kids sometimes. 🧪🎢
Image shows several students' hands while working on beaded bracelets. Orange trays are used to contain the beads. Several containers of different colored beads and finished bracelets are also on the table.

You probably have! When I moved three physics classrooms and a prep room from one building to the other the principal offered to rent me a dumpster. I said no, took the time to recycle and donate what I could but still maxed out my allowed moving space.

🎢🧪I recently visited a local new physics teacher's room and she inherited a LOT of stuff. It made me reflect on when I moved into physics classrooms and had to sort through other people's equipment. It can be daunting so I wrote this guide: breebarnettdreyfuss.blogspot.com/2026/08/phys...

Spirit week continues with sunglasses day. I brought a different pair for each period and had them guess which color would be randomly pulled to wear for their period. I'm a big proponent for bringing the whimsy.

My AP Chem teacher cousin made these whiteboard holders for us a while ago. Super simple to make. Someone asked for the design today so I thought I would share. The "stand" is made of two 2"x4" wood pieces about 20" long. There is a slit about 10* from the vertical that the whiteboard fits into.🎢🧪
A whiteboard is shown nearly vertical supported by two 2"x4"s with angled slots in them. A whiteboard is shown nearly vertical supported by two 2"x4"s with angled slots in them. The angle of the slot is 10 degrees from the vertical so that the whiteboard has a bit of an angle. This slot starts about 4" back from one edge of each 2"x4" wood piece.

I was looking for a new graphic for my error analysis discussion and went down a rabbit hole of "human error analysis" which seems to come from a lot of lab safety and HR fields. Was not expecting to find a group of people that dislike "human error" listed as a cause of error more than teachers. 🧪🎢
A flow chart is shown that describes actual causes for something that might be labeled as "human error". The whole chart can be read here: https://media.licdn.com/dms/image/v2/D5622AQHu5_USt2rAvw/feedshare-shrink_800/B56ZlSsc.jJ8Ag-/0/1758029031600?e=2147483647&v=beta&t=KCvC_dJLexwcATYcYot-lwAsMERiMrV5FX6qiOsjysk

Good example of teacher life. This is the charger for my classroom microphone system. One of two ports no longer charges, the other only charges when just in the right position. Since I frequently find it uncharged in the morning now I use a magnet to hold it in the correct position. 🤞
A black rectangular microphone is in one port of a charging station. The other port has painter's tape over it. A magnetic hook is above the microphone holding it in place.

As higher-education programs compete for a shrinking pool of students, departments must better communicate the value that a physics major brings.

This summer I bought beads to make "physics" bracelets. I made over a hundred for #AAPTSM26 to give away and yesterday our STEP UP Club made more for members. After school starts my AP classes will get to design their own. Trying to bring some fun and whimsy to Physics. 🎢🧪
Six students, with emoji over their faces, are shown sitting at a lab table in a classroom. On the table are an assortment of beads and bracelet making supplies. Bree is shown in a real top with her right arm in front of her. Her wrist has seven beaded bracelets that say "physics" in block letters with different colors beads.

#Teach180 Day 180 Physics had free response and multiple choice part to their final, my student teacher is taking the lead on the short answer grading. Grades won't have to be finalized until next week. Still lots and lots of cleaning and putting away to do. Graduation ceremony was bittersweet. 🎢🧪

#Teach180 Day 179 The other two APs had their finals today with more versions. An example of why notes to your future self are important. Each version had at least one typo that confused kids. Some were missing images (not required to answer the question but I still drew them up on the board). 🧪🎢

#Teach180 Day 178 Prep meant I got to catch up on cleaning up labs but still have a lot of summer cleaning to do. One class of AP C took their final: 70 multiple choice in two hours. They kept asking if it would be easy. I asked if my other tests were and they said "sometimes." We shall see. 🎢🧪

#Teach180 Day 177 My student teacher did a new review game in which half the class was a team against the other. Two from each side competed to grab a stuffed animal first to answer a review question. Kids got way into it, rules had to be revised, new ones instated along the way, judgements made. 🧪🎢
