By popular demand (OK, a handful of “eeek, I missed the deadline. Can I still submit” emails), we’ve decided to extend the deadline until 16th October. Who knew a CfP deadline coinciding with teaching ramping up would cause such havoc?! #Skystorians

Good morning, comrades! Let's start the week with some thoughts on institutional and student emailing.

I also reinforce it by genuinely not responding quickly to emails. It lowers expectations ;-)

Yup! I do it by constantly reiterating when my office hours are and that they are the best/most appropriate place to get specific, timely answers and one-on-one attention.

Last: this is a reminder that there's a difference between Best Practices (ideal) and Best Practices (reality). Once you have job security, stop driving yourself mad to reach that ideal. Create a new reality with boundaries.

I am a prof all the time, but I am THEIR prof only some of the time. They pay for my classes as part of their tuition, but that's not the ONLY thing that their tuition is paying for, so it would be a mistake to treat it as such.
110
Erin Weinberg @bardolator.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
It doesn't mean that I'll *never* respond to emails, it means that I want students to adjust their expectations. If they were sending Teams messages to their high school teachers, they need to know that that resource is not available to them at university.

Erin Weinberg @bardolator.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
If my students don't feel comfortable coming to class early, asking questions in front of the class, or visiting my office hours, that's really not on me. Their tuition pays for a range of supports. My support is available during class and office hours.
110
Erin Weinberg @bardolator.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The necessity is this: my students see me for 3.0 credit hours a semester. I am there to answer questions in class. If they get there early, they can ask me early. If that doesn't work for them, they can ask me during my 2 hours of officially-mandated office hours a week.

Erin Weinberg @bardolator.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
So, with that in mind, I'm no longer doing the "drop me an email" thing. Sure, it was best practices to be able to give infinite feedback to my entire classlist before they submitted their assignments, but that was going way above and beyond the necessity.
110
Erin Weinberg @bardolator.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Now, I frame everything around "you pay for a whole range of resources." Classes. Library. Academic Learning Centre. Mental Health services. Their tuition payments are holistic and it's *their* job to get their money's worth.

Erin Weinberg @bardolator.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Six years in, I still feel anxious about students feeling like they're not getting value from me for their tuition.

Erin Weinberg @bardolator.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Six years ago, I was precariously employed, COVID was ravaging everyone's mental health, so "if this doesn't work for you, email me" was my common refrain. It came from a really good place. It is not sustainable.
110
Erin Weinberg @bardolator.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Emails. Student emails. There was a time when email didn't exist: it wasn't part of the job description. Remember that.
110
Erin Weinberg @bardolator.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
This is my 6th year at my permanent job. These thoughts are based on my having the job security to be able to make decisions for my mental health.

Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.
