Desk rejections ≠ bad manuscript. Academic journals have habitus—their own style, tone, & preferences. A desk reject often means your paper isn’t the right fit, not that it lacks merit. Don’t lose ❤️. The same piece might ⛵️ through elsewhere. Reread the comments & try again. #AcademicBluesky

Every time I go on leave (annual or sick), I set up an auto-responder with an out of office message. Every time, without fail; someone will begin interacting with it, thinking I am instantly replying to their emails with the same message over and over again. This has been happening FOR THREE YEARS.

I suffer from chronic “passive voice” in my writing. It comes from lack of surety and confidence in my ability to write. It feels more comfortable and appropriate, even when I’m writing for publication.

I bailed on Scrivener and went back to a combo of Obsidian and Word. Obsidian for raw writing and chunks of that first draft. Word for polishing it off and making edits.

I think it is part laziness and partly a change in culture towards degrees. I find that students are less wanting to learn and are more interested in being credentialed. Therefore, the fact that they have showed up and completed the bare minimum is reason enough to get the testamur.
