Because We have only our own minds with which to puzzle what's been said and we tend towards negative outcomes. Thus we react defensively against a perceived insult or threat that's likely not there. The other thing is that with no physical presence, there's no Boundaries to avoid crossing.

The human Element is removed through the screen. It's why it's so easy to get angry and hateful towards people online. you have nothing to work with. all the animal cues we're supposed to have to help us navigate social interactions aren't there. just words on a screen. Even Emoji's don't help.
