I don’t want to brag too much, Cheesecake Factory, but I spend every night in Benjamin Lesnick.

Hear me out, though: could this Doctor Who meet the Star Trek Scouts?

What a wonderful article: Star Trek’s overlords don’t know how lucky they are to have a fandom that preserves these kinds of stories.

Large Lizard! This very solid tuxedo cat is my mom’s real caretaker. She even came to visit her at the rehab hospital!

Hollywood doesn’t know about the Maniac?!

The now defunct CIG LA office used to be filled with of boxes of American Knight research material.

040

Chris Roberts was developing a World War I flying movie called American Knight at the time and the Flyboys box office was the final nail in its coffin.

Uh well I know one that absolutely didn’t.

Mysteries from my parents’ house: the toilet paper in my dad’s bathroom is sealed with a reflective ghost sticker?

Are you doing corporate training on Babylon 5?

People criticizing this are forgetting their history; it was just twenty years ago that President Whitmore nuked Houston and then quickly became more popular than ever.

040

This is probably a 2001 situation where you saw Saturn in the original text but they changed it to Jupiter for the movie.

And a real downer ending! Which is probably how all stories about children fighting space wars should go. A great episode that introduces a lot of important things for the rest of the show. Next week we'll do WORD OF HONOR!

010

Turns out the most delicate instrument wasn't a Scimitar but the human brain! I recently learned that cartoons where characters wear these Back to the Future style electro-hats is a specific fetish and that the people that are into that absolutely have catalogued this appearance. Takes all sorts!

Archer being forced to kill Blizzard is a surprising beat for a 1990s Saturday morning cartoon and it's the start of a long storyline where she suffers PTSD over all this. Neat stuff!

And these are Epees, also from Wing Commander II.

And our first look at the Broadsword bombers, originally designed for Wing Commander II. Fans, as you can imagine, were unhappy that they showed up earlier in the timeline. Fans! (shakes fist).

Rare shot at the least seen of the twelve cadets: WEASEL and BULLDOG. Weasel is the pilot that dies at the start of the first scramble mission in Wing Commander III!

The orange vests are back for act three! Shows like Academy were boarded and animated by act rather than in one swoop for each episode and the closer you look the more you can pick out stylistic differences.

Mark Hamill does triple duty this week; he also voices the security guard who finds Blizzard!

100

And here's one of the great hints at figuring out the show's awkward setup: the 'cadets' are already comissioned officers, they're attending a post-graduate command school (literally a 'Wing Commander Academy').

100

The pilot Payback attacks is Hyena, who is weirdly (pre the series bible) intended to be Vagabond's brother! Again, this never comes up.

100

I never noticed Guthrig's ridiculous scribbles when he's talking to Archer before this. Also a doctor immediately dismissing a woman's serious concerns is pretty on point!

Act 2 gives us our first look at sickbay, which will show up a few times. Wing Commander II's original script planned to show us the Concordia's sickbay but those plans were reduced to a couple of mentions of Dr. Sayers in the end.

The emergency recovery stuff all looks so great, and this tracking shot of a deck truck thing is particularly magnificent.

Do binary stars actually shoot flares that mess up your brain? Uh as long as you have no followup questions, yes. Note that the clips reused in the intro are colored red instead of blue here!

Introducing some of our recurring Tiger's Claw bridge crew. That's Communications Tech and Sensor Tech. With series regulars Mark Hamill and Lauri Hendler voicing them, respectively!

Tim Eldred is an enormous fan of classic anime and he gave one of the Tiger's Claw deck crewmen a Captain Harlock skull tattoo on their model sheets... you can pick it out on screen here!

Grikath bombers from Wing Commander II! These will show up several times on the show. This is a Madhouse episode and the space animation in the first act is as good as it gets for the show; lots of sweeping movement and this really cool anime styling.

Another WC3 nod, it's the same shot of the elevator descending. This act was the first one boarded by Tim Eldred, who is an incredible figure in animation (and animation history) to this day. He also did a lot of the secondary character designs for the show.

Introducing another regular, the ship's psychologist Guthrig. Who is wearing... Bubsy's sweater? The series bible confirms that he's supposed to be Guthrig Andropolos, the writer of the timeline in Victory Streak and the son of the captain of the Iason. What?!

230

Everyone is wearing Wing Commander III flight suits in the first act! No orange Star Wars vests.

Meet Blizzard! He's one of the twelve base cadets but we haven't seen him before, which is the weakest aspect of this otherwise excellent story. He's the Iceman archetype and... no we don't know why he's blue. It's never addressed. Is he a weird alien? Maybe but his name is "Alan Getz".
