(Pt.3) In Ganesh’s sculpture the face is absent, referencing the vandalism, theft and neglect affecting many ancient statues. It also serves as a symbolic threshold – a gate to the underworld through which we are invited to pass. Pass through the gate and explore the full exhibition every Wed-Sun.

(Pt.2) Chitra Ganesh’s totemic sculpture is based on a female figurine of a Sumerian worshipper from the Temple of Inanna in the ancient city of Nippur (c. 2700–2500 BCE), an artefact now held in the collection of the Iraq Museum in Baghdad.

(Pt.1) In Chitra Ganesh's exhibition is a new work entitled Votive Figure, made from steel, gauze, projection, polyester padding, wood, and paint. Votive statues were objects of devotion commonly used in rituals in ancient cultures and offered to a god & goddess at a sacred place such as a temple.

Went to the #TishMurtha exhibition at @balticgateshead.bsky.social today. Important and brutally honest social commentary of 1980s Newcastle at a time of searing social change. Painfully enlightening even for those of us who lived through it.

The building entrance is under an elongated canopy where there's also a cafe and terrace.
