Masern sind zudem keineswegs harmlos: Neben akuten Komplikationen wie Lungen- oder Gehirnentzündung kann Jahre nach der Infektion noch eine seltene, aber fast immer tödlich verlaufende Spätfolge auftreten, die SSPE (subakute sklerosierende Panenzephalitis) . (4/6)

Masern gehören zu den ansteckendsten Infektionskrankheiten überhaupt. Bei empfänglichen Kontaktpersonen liegt das Infektionsrisiko bei bis zu 90 %. Eine infizierte Person kann also sehr viele weitere Menschen anstecken. Dazu kommen drei entscheidende Eigenschaften: (2/6)

Das Virus hat keinen tierischen Reservoirwirt, nur einen Serotyp und eine sehr wirksame Impfung. Dafür braucht es allerdings eine sehr hohe Bevölkerungsimmunität, etwa 95 %. Sinkt sie darunter, können einzelne eingeschleppte Fälle wieder große Ausbrüche auslösen. (6/6)

Diese möglichen schweren Verläufe und Spätfolgen sind auch ein Grund, warum Deutschland für bestimmte Einrichtungen und Personengruppen einen Nachweis des Masern-Immunschutzes vorschreibt. Und trotzdem gehören Masern zu den Infektionen, die wir grundsätzlich eliminieren könnten: (5/6)

Life of a #PI: The past six months have been incredibly challenging. I dealt with health issues, lost my mentor unexpectedly after more than 20 years of working together, and suddenly felt responsible for supporting his group, especially his PhD students, while still on parental leave. (1/4)
