It’s a worth a shot to suggest!!! And then you can participate! In reality, the patrons smashed the plates outside and the plates were contained within paper bags. I felt mighty guilty about the happy songs, though. That part was real lol

“Promise I won’t smash the dinner plate,” Ed joked. Ed hung out in the Adult department until close, and then waited outside for Stede. They drove separately to the restaurant since Stede couldn’t leave his car behind, and then drove separately back to Ed’s house.

Ed grinned and looked past Stede to the children strewn about playing with their various toys. “Kinda wish I came to this thing, if I’m honest. Mine was pretty cool, though. What time is this one over?” Stede looked at his watch. “Playtime goes on for about another twenty minutes or so.”

As Stede looked on, the door opened behind him. He turned and was startled to find Ed there, a large paper bag in his hand, presumably containing the shards of his therapy plate.

The group discussion and plate smashing continued on next door, while the children played dressup, jumped on the sensory tiles, built abstract things with Legos, and put together floor puzzles. The parents sat on the chairs against the wall and talked among themselves.

Stede’s shoulders dropped in relief, and then he smiled to himself when he heard a plate smash on the floor. With the storytime portion of his program over, Stede ushered the children over to the toys to play and watched contentedly as they built train tracks.

It appeared that that was only the first group of a few people who discussed their traumas and struggles they were trying to work through. Now the next group began to speak, and among them, Ed’s voice filtered over the partition and Stede heard him clearly. It was about his father.

But then the plate smashing began. Just in time for Stede to start playing the prescribed songs on the Bluetooth speaker that Jim had set at a rather remarkably high volume. Stede decided that was for the best to drown out the crashes and the smashes.

The second book, The Leaf Thief, was just as delightful. All the while, the people in the next room were chattering away, and Stede managed to catch only fragments. The topics seemed awfully depressing, even tragic, and he wondered if maybe there was more to it than simply making noise.

Once everyone was seated on the alphabet carpet, Stede began reading the first book, SPlat the Cat and the Pumpkin-Picking Plan, and suddenly he was in his element. The children warmed to him as he used his silly voices, and they laughed and crowded him. Even the parents were enjoying themselves.
