bajar.bsky.social @bajar.bsky.social · 20/06/2026I have mixed feelings on this. On one hand I really enjoy when the UFWC leaves a tournament early for the novelty. On the other hand, spending the rest of the year in a Nations League group with France Italy and Belgium is maybe not the most novel possible use of the rest of the year. 120

bajar.bsky.social @bajar.bsky.social · 05/06/2026overall analyzed 129 groups in 3rd place advancing tournaments and only found 5 examples of groups where it could have possibly happened. Its so cool we struck gold once with Colombia in 94. Its gonna be a big ask for this to happen again but I'm rooting for it. 231
bajar.bsky.social @bajar.bsky.social · 05/06/2026Euro 2024 Group E. Probably one of the weirdest groups in any tournament ever. If you start this group with Belgium or Slovakia as holders then Ukraine goes home with the championship and a 4th place 4 point finish. A very very rare 4 point exit. 110
bajar.bsky.social @bajar.bsky.social · 05/06/20262021 AFCON Group B. Zimbabwe beats Guinea on the last matchday so if you start this group with Guinea or Malawi as holders then Zimbabwe snipes the championship on their 3-point 4th place finish. 110
bajar.bsky.social @bajar.bsky.social · 05/06/20262015 Copa America Group A. Mexico had 2 draws but they lose to 2 loss Ecuador on the last matchday. So if you start this group with Mexico as holders it exits on 3 point Ecuador who don't have enough points to qualify as a 3rd place team. 110
bajar.bsky.social @bajar.bsky.social · 05/06/20261994 World Cup Group A. The only one that actually happened IRL. Colombia ends up eliminated with the UFWC if you start it on Romania, Colombia, or Switzerland. If you start it on USA then it advances to the knockouts on winners Romania. 131
bajar.bsky.social @bajar.bsky.social · 05/06/20261990 World Cup Group B. Soviet Union defeats Cameroon on the last matchday but its not enough to avoid a 4th place finish. I love this group because its the only one where the eliminated team (Soviet Union in this case) always ends up as holders no matter who the original holders are. 120
bajar.bsky.social @bajar.bsky.social · 05/06/2026out of curiosity I checked historically in tournaments with potential 3rd place advancement how many groups could this ever have happened. unsurprisingly the 3rd place advancement makes this way harder than traditional bottom 2 group elimination. Only 5 potential historical examples. 120
bajar.bsky.social @bajar.bsky.social · 05/06/2026always a fun scenario which I'll root for. Last it happened was 1994 with Colombia. I was worried that it will be harder in a tournament which has 3rd place advancement but that historical precedent in Colombia gives me some hope, lol. 120
