Cross-protocol from the start (ATproto + ActivityPub), fully social, made for the less tech-savvy, compatible with the WriteFreely API, and generally incorporates the biggest lessons from running @write.as over a decade.

Sooo I might be launching a new publishing platform soon -- at least as an experiment. It's basically what I'd build if I was starting @write.as in 2026 instead of 2015. (And well, if Write.as didn't already exist.)

I saw something a while ago that was some "ATproto operating system" but lost it inside 800 browser tabs 🫣 Anyone know the name of it?

It's a good essay that makes other great points, but the "Mary problem" so dumb lol. Like Mary can do anything! She wouldn't want to be a librarian? Her grand achievement would be marrying someone else? George "isn't going to like seeing it" because she won't recognize him, and he loves her. Duh.

Matt Baer @baer.works · 24/12/2025
Anyone who's ever been as bone-headed with love as George is knows how much Mary loves only him. That's what makes most of the movie so frustrating, his refusal of what's right in front of him the whole time. The scene where he's an ass and Mary smashes the record she put on says it all, for one.

Twitter is never coming back. It was a moment of time. Microblogging is a bad modality in a world flooded with malicious velocity, algorithmic distortion & frankly patterns we rewarded w attention in the peak twitter era. We need to invent new forms, probably lots of them.

our networks are tightly coupled with our media formats, so something that should be a blog post instead comes out as this unwanted mutant child of maybe-photo, maybe-video, maybe-text — ground up and processed into this unappetizing content soup for us to begrudgingly slurp

Honestly bring back timed programming and put it in streaming services. Curate channels and let me pick one. Sometimes I just wanna watch *something* without thinking too hard about it.

For one, being able to leverage moderation already in bsky would be absolutely huge. Having to build all that functionality from scratch is the single thing keeping us from already having ActivityPub-enabled comments on blogs.
010
Matt Baer @baer.works · 25/11/2024
Seeing this, most useful and quickest way to getting ATproto into @write.as could be comments.

Matt Baer @baer.works · 23/11/2024
Beyond that, we could always send the full post contents, maybe both short and long formats alongside each other, etc. (I think that's the ideal for a platform like ours in these kinds of networks)
020
Matt Baer @baer.works · 23/11/2024
From the fediverse, I've seen it's hard to cram long-form content into short-form platforms without good client support (and that's beyond my scope). So short-term, I think would use the bsky schema and just send a post intro with the link.

Matt Baer @baer.works · 23/11/2024
This is all really great information — thanks so much for sharing! I'll start digging into it all. I've been thinking of which way to go, but I think baking a PDS into W.a is the goal.
110
Matt Baer @baer.works · 23/11/2024
So implementing this on @write.as is trivial. But all it really does is verify that you own your Write.as blog. That's great, but especially with our ActivityPub integration, I think people will expect it to do more, like send out your posts from that handle.

I'm just having trouble finding these components in bsky's repos. Luckily our backend is in Go too, so hopefully it's relatively straightforward
110
Matt Baer @baer.works · 18/11/2024
I'd like to experiment with adding ATproto support alongside ActivityPub in @write.as, but where do I start? Assuming all blog posts would be hosted in our PDS, and we'd provide identity so people can have e.g. @myblog.write.as

the spammers are getting clever over on github
A WriteFreely Github issie: "Hello everyone,

I’m considering using WriteFreely to power the blog for my jewelry store, Australian Opal Direct (linking to their site), and would love some advice. My main goal is to create engaging content that highlights the beauty and history of opal jewelry while also boosting SEO.

A few questions:

Does WriteFreely support SEO optimizations (like meta tags or sitemaps)?
Are there any themes or plugins that work well for product-focused blogs?
Is it easy to integrate product links within blog posts to drive traffic to specific pages?
Can I easily track content performance using analytics tools?
Thanks in advance for any guidance or tips from the community!"
