This cheeky chimney pot once let out smoke from a merchant’s house in the High Street of 14th-century Oxford. It was found when excavations were made for new buildings in the 19th century. Made of unglazed, fired clay, you can see where the facial features have been moulded by hand.

One of my favorite #Roman objects: World's oldest known "Swiss army knife", including a hinged knife, fork, spoon, spike, prick, sieve, spatula. Unfortunately, there is no provenance of this multi-tool, but it’s not a unique item: There are a few more examples, e.g. one was...🧵1/2 🏺 #archaeology
The folding multi-tool, it is built around a silver handle and a set of folding, pivoted implements. Its most visible feature is the broad oval spoon at the left; additional utensils fold from the opposite end and beneath the handle. A dark, heavily corroded piece along the top is the original iron knife blade.

New life-hack for writers: "[Science-fiction writer Hugo] Gernsback’s isolator device - part diving suit, part monastic cell - did help him to work, he said, but it came with a risk of suffocation. He later installed an air supply."

A Balinese singa is a mythical, winged lion creature serving as a protective guardian, symbol of strength, and ward against evil spirits in Balinese Hinduism. Often carved from wood or stone with a ferocious expression, bulging eyes, and fangs, these figures are commonly placed on roof corners, temples (puri), or homes, similar to gargoyles. The hindu carvers of Bali believed that the living wood could be imbued with the actual protective spirit by consecration in a ritual. Westerners may see a work of art, but the creator no doubt also saw a deeply spiritual object!

Roman anti-cheating gaming accessory! This Roman ‘turricula’ (dice tower) was used to ensure a fair roll of the dice! 🎲🎲🎲 Dice dropped into the top, tumbled over sloping internal levels, and appeared randomly below. From Froitzheim, Germany, AD 300-400 📷 LVR-Landesmuseum Bonn #Archaeology
The image shows a rectangular Roman dice tower (turricula) made of four copper alloy (bronze) plates with punched cut-out Latin letters and cut-out decorative patterns. At the bottom front is a stepped exit chute with small bronze bells attached to the opening. The tower is a Roman anti-cheating device. It has an open top and is hollow inside except for three staggered, downward-sloping plates, designed to randomize dice as they fall, ensuring unpredictable dice rolls. When the dice rolled out of the exit chute they rang the bells! There is a decorative dolphin either side of the stepped exit chute. The top of the front plate has two decorative pine cone finials. Height 25 cm. There is a single die shown next to the stepped base to illustrate how it was used.

The front inscription reads:
PICTOS VICTOS
HOSTIS DELETA
LVDITE SECVRI

Translated as: ‘The Picts defeated, the enemy has been destroyed, play in safety’.

Around the top of the three remaining sides, a second inscription made with cut out letters reads:

‘UTERI/FELIX/VIVAS’ translated as ‘Use happily; may you live well’.

Found at a Roman villa at Froitzheim in Germany in 1985.
