One of @newertkrocker.bsky.social ’s students made this for him years ago, and while we own other pieces of their art now that they are a “real,” Grown Up Artist, this one still makes me chuckle every single time I pass by it. Shout out to English Teachers and amazing students.

It’s the time of year when so many delicious things are in season in Ohio and I am in heaven because it makes making tasty food SO easy

I know that “hot” in the Midwest isn’t necessarily “hot” of other places. Climate change is real and central air (and window unit air) isn’t a given in many parts of Ohio! I never had air conditioning of any sort until AFTER college. Keep an eye on your neighbors and elders and stay cool, friends.

The coolest part of beet green pesto is the lil’ pink bits in the pesto…

Okay so I made this pesto sauce from some blanched beet greens and garlic scapes and then I made a pasta salad. I sort of wish I had balsamic glaze or something? but otherwise p. good. I feel like the leftover pesto will be pretty good on sandwiches.
A blue bowl holds some pasta with green flecks of pesto sauce on it. It is mixed with tomatoes, cucumbers, mozzarella and cannellini beans.

Tonight’s dinner left me very satisfied and with two thoughts: 1) fresh in season strawberries really are like a totally different fruit than my desperate January grocery store strawberries 2) I always feel like beets are going to be too much work and then roasting them is SO easy.
A roasted beet and strawberry salad with honey balsamic vinaigrette. The strawberries and beets sit on butter lettuce and cucumbers. There is crumbly goat cheese and cannellini beans on top. The food is in a blue bowl on top of a woven placemat.

( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°) hey wyd? (☞゚∀゚)☞ Oh nm just taxing my life with the forethought of grief
The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

It’s an unreal time to be in public education in Ohio. Federal funding directly impacts every single school in our district. State level policies threaten to undermine all we do, as well. We cannot stop fighting, calling, and raising hell.
A blue flyer which reads: Do cuts to the Department of Education have an impact in Ohio?
Gutting the Department of Education would:
-Deny 284,328 Ohio children of critical special education services.
-strip over 1 million vulnerable Ohio kids of critical education services.
-make college more unaffordable for working families.
-Cut career and technical education programs.
-Reduce teachers, increase class size.
-Reduce direct support for children.

Last one, I promise! The Raincoat by Ada Limón
The Raincoat

When the doctor suggested surgery
and a brace for all my youngest years,
my parents scrambled to take me
to massage therapy, deep tissue work,
osteopathy, and soon my crooked spine
unspooled a bit, I could breathe again,
and move more in a body unclouded
by pain. My mom would tell me to sing
songs to her the whole forty-five minute
drive to Middle Two Rock Road and forty-
five minutes back from physical therapy.
She’d say, even my voice sounded unfettered
by my spine afterward. So I sang and sang,
because I thought she liked it. I never
asked her what she gave up to drive me,
or how her day was before this chore. Today,
at her age, I was driving myself home from yet
another spine appointment, singing along
to some maudlin but solid song on the radio,
and I saw a mom take her raincoat off
and give it to her young daughter when
a storm took over the afternoon. My god,
I thought, my whole life I’ve been under her
raincoat thinking it was somehow a marvel
that I never got wet.

Sonnet XVII by Pablo Neruda (this one is so so beautiful in the original Spanish, too❤️)
I Do Not Love You

I do not love you as if you were salt rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

that this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.
-Pablo Neruda

Always love your threads ❤️ The Orange by Wendy Cope
The Orange

At lunchtime I bought a huge orange—
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave—
They got quarters and I had a half.

And that orange, it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It’s new.

The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all the jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I’m glad I exist.

— Wendy Cope

Wendell Berry’s “A Purification” always comes to mind at the new year—though admittedly where I live spring is still far off.
At start of spring I open a trench
in the ground. I put into it
the winter's accumulation of paper,
pages I do not want to read
again, useless words, fragments,
errors. And I put into it
the contents of the outhouse:
light of the sun, growth of the ground,
finished with one of their journeys.
To the sky, to the wind, then,
and to the faithful trees, I confess
my sins: that I have not been happy
enough, considering my good luck;
have listened to too much noise;
have been inattentive to wonders;
have lusted after praise.
And then upon the gathered refuse
of mind and body, I close the trench,
folding shut again the dark,
the deathless earth. Beneath that seal
the old escapes into the new.
