“Nobody sat at a computer and said "go hack Hugging Face." But when you design these systems, you're building a pinball machine for words, with different levers interacting to bounce the steel ball of language moving against other levers and mechanisms”

Not nearly as cool as this, but one of the things I did with HyperCard back in the 90’s was a “book report” on the blast radius of a nuclear detonation. And now I feel old 🤣

Some scams are easier to spot than others. That said, we get these semi-regularly and they are only getting more focused and custom-tailored, so be careful writers! And, no, we didn’t reply, but it was super-tempting.
Text from a scam email message which reads:

Hi Arthur C. Clarke,

I recently came across 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 25th Anniversary Edition, and wanted to reach out.

I’ve been connecting with authors whose books are available to readers but may not be reaching as many new audiences as they could.

I’m curious how has your experience been with book visibility and reaching new readers? And have you considered exploring new ways to promote your book or expand its reach to additional platforms?

I’d genuinely be interested in hearing your thoughts and experience.

Eöl from the Silmarillion. Dark Elf, made cool weapons and armor, married to a elven princess. Actually a controlling a-hole who tried to kill his son with a poisoned spear and ended up killing his wife. Then thrown off a cliff. Ending richly deserved, not a very movie like ending 🤣

1: anytime anyone says “we are not ready for a conversation about X” usually means what follows can be safely disregarded as nonsense. 2: I resent that I now know what “Roko's basilisk” is and I want that brain space back.

I was struck by the extent to which this reviewer (and many other people, I'm afraid) have lost sight of the possibility of refusal. And so I want to reaffirm: There is no responsible use without the possibility of refusal. >>

Sure, hand the ai companies another marketing win. It’s not a rogue ai, it’s a lack of willingness or ability to implement a secure sandbox, or even an air gap. It’s laziness but marketing stepped in and rewrote the story.

Wow this doesn’t seem like to be much of an intellectual take down of “dark enlightenment” you might think… And you would be 💯 correct because the whole concept is devoid of any coherent thought I could take away from the essay. Tyranny sucks no matter what label you put on it.

3: At the end of LOTR, the hobbits stage an armed rebellion against the ultimate “Dark Elf” Saruman. Life in the Shire sucked under his leadership and the hobbits were all sick of his 💩. Saruman gets knifed in the back by his own lackey. This is the end road of “dark enlightenment”

Finished Curtis Yarvin’s essay on hobbits, high elves and dark elves. 1: WTF is this crap (particularly the section on spouse abuse) 2: he needs to get his head out of his ass. Reality doesn’t work the way he indicates and this essay falls apart badly trying to apply it to the real world.

Echoing some of the other post here. I am an IC. My company has given us access to a decent amount of AI tools. Yet my week is full of coordination emails and meetings with other teams. With less management and PM’s it’s a giant time sink for me. How is AI supposed to help with this?

Like both 1776 and 1863, the tyrants only dimly realize what they've bred or awakened in opposition. Like both 1776 and 1863, the time is ripe for the imperfect people of a very imperfect society to make the Union more perfect and to earn the pride they may feel for this country.

This applies to so many IT domains. If you don’t understand the tradeoffs for the domain, you start making some bombastic statements that sound really silly to anyone who has worked in that space.

Sane API or library design (ie well thought out tools) Good docs Team is responsive when we have questions (even if it’s for handholding 🤣) My experience with these teams have shown that their technical chops have been solid as well. Fast API’s with awesome up time.
